Wild seed source for varieties native to the prairies.

I'm seriously considering some of the grasses for fodder and to sow near sloughs to attract wildlife. Wild Onion, Ground Plum and Indian Breadroot as insurance against a garden failure? Why the heck not?

That's a great idea Doe. Every little thing you can do like that is going to be helpful.

I recently got this really disturbing email about Seed Savers.  who the F is Amy Goldman and why is she trying to destroy Seed Savers?

Fw: Seed Savers Exchange power grab - Kent Whealy screwed‏

Dear Folks:

There appears to have been a naked grab for power at Seed Savers
Exchange in Decorah, Iowa. The end aims are unknown but it may be that
Johnny's seeds are invovled and the aim may be to simply kill SSE or
worse - co-opt a huge bank of germplasm and patent it.

Below is the link to the open letter Kent Whealy send to members in
the SSE Yearbook. It also includes more information about the board
takeover that loks like Johnny's Seeds is behind or collusive with
Whealy's being unceremoniously - possibly illegally - fired and run
off. This information is circulating on permaculture and bioregion
lists and needs to be disseminated as far and wide as possible.

Please forgive the cross-post but this is important and the more
people who know about it the quickest - the better.

Re: Power grab at Seed Savers Exchange -[Fwd: [permaculture] changes
at seed saver's exchange]
See this URL for a digitized photocopy of Kent's letter:

>> Neil Hamilton
>> Deborah Madison
>> Rob Johnson (Johnny's Seeds)
>> Cary Fowler (Global Crop Diversity Trust)

>> Many of you may be familiar with the work, buy garden seeds from or
even be members of Seed Saver's Exchange in Decorah Iowa. You may
have heard Kent Whealy give one of his inspiring talks. Here is a
letter that Kent sent out after he was fired. It sounds pretty
apalling. It sounds like this massive and amazing seed bank may have
fallen into the wrong hands.....one of the many perils of
centralization. The link to the letter is below.

I'd like to withdraw my nominations for 2 seed companies I previously posted.

Westcoastseeds.com
Stellarseeds.com

I ordered very early from both of these companies and West Coast Seeds only had 1/2 my order.  They did the same thing last year but I ordered late, so I thought that was why....guess not.
Stellar Seeds cashed my check at the very beginning of January and I've yet to hear anything from them.
I'm not being vindictive here...just concerned that some people will order from these companies that I vouched for.

For anyone else looking for subtropical/tropical species:

tropilab.com

Aside from seed from tropical sources, they also sell herbal remedies, tinctures, and such as well.  The site is well ladi out and very informative...

PAMELA--what happened to telford mills seeds  i went looking for it but couldn't find it.

i also figured out what i did wrong with my tomato crop last year, i didn't have determinate varieties so that the crop ripens mostly all at once.  so i couldn't can any for winter.  so i ordered two types of determinate types and one indeterminate for slicing and fresh eating.  i am also going to try to grow artichokes again this year.  i love them and hopefully i can get them going.  the wind killed them last year while they were only tiny.  i am going to buy some grow lights and really get the babies up and started this time.  i hope.
