It is not surprising, really. Most people cannot even come to terms with their own mortality.

It is very difficult to talk to anyone about this subject they quickly start to think your a paranoid loon and yet you need to talk to
them because you need their help to prepare. I myself only have two other families who are preparing with me although I would
like to have had a whole community (safety in numbers) of people I could trust by this time. It does seem like a hopeless task
to me. What are the alternatives so you must keep trying.

This is a great start, 007! I'm basically on my own, although there are a few important people in my life who are at least *getting there.*  But having two whole other families ... that's great. Whatever you're doing is starting to work!

Or, more to the point, most people lack any appropriate emotional response, when confronted with energy, population, food, water, or economic issues.

I think this lack of emotional response is similar to the nature of women in the sex trade.  They are dead inside, from a lifetime of being used, lied to, manipulated, used, beaten down, treated maliciously, and used.

and where is the problem? if most people don't care, we will fight less warlords or foe comunities...
if most people don't care, all what will happen will be more predictable.
if most people don't care, comunal invests will be sured.
if most people don't care, we won't care about so many people.
if most people don't care, they will die sooner and peacefully.
if most people don't care, they will be more responsable of their own acts and you -and I- will be innocent from any charge.
That's a good new, isn't it?

True but when its your family and friends that don't care, its very frustrating and sad.

I love my family and friends like most of you -I supose-...but I can not convince them...they believe I'm mad...or I 'm exagerating...what could I do? what could they do?

but I have an idea: I will kidnap -if I can and with violence if it's required- all them on the first symptoms of the oil collapse.
I can not waste time trying convince them...

yes, people give me strange looks when I say our global civilization is in dire need of a crash-course manhattan project style effort at greatly increasing longevity.  You know, because we're all going to die.

We got all hyped up cause hitler might get the bomb and some of us might die a little EARLY, but no one can seem to confront the fact that we're ALL going to die unless we do something... as a civilization.

Think there would be such asshats in power committing such asshattery if everyone knew they'd be on this earth in another 300 years?  The future is a "commons" as much as anything... once you have to live in it, you're forced to be a little less dumb about it.

One thing that's helped me overcome the glaze eye look is I started mentioning Peak Oil to people back in 2003 when oil was trading in the mid 30's. I'd bring it up now and then just to keep their mind on it. Then, this year, as prices got traction, I'd have some of them come around and say, "Yea, that oil stuff you were talking about might really be going on."  They still only get it like 10% but they don't laugh at me anymore.

If you want to convince someone just slowly over the course of years drop a comment every few months. Say something like, "I've been buying oil stocks. I hear we'll be at $200 a barrel soon." They'll laugh it off but as they themselves watch the price soar and the economy get worse, you'll see them come around. Don't waste time though in long conversations trying to convince anyone of anything. Save your breath.

My best experiences to date spring from precisely what you proscribe, Suburb.

I talk to working class people like a friend who is a single MOM and a waitress.   Her last comment to me was  "don't talk about oil tonight all my cabinets are full of food  and I

don't have any more room.  She  got   it.

Another woman at the same place  when I started talking about peak oil said "Shit we are going to be a third world country"

It seems like the people who have had very little in this world get it right away,  people who have had everything  can't  focus on living without something.

A lot  of the people I talk to don't have internet,  but get it right away.   Up here we are already at the edge of the world.  People choose to be here because

They like it that way.

Come on, even if they care or you can convince them or just future scares them, are they really really ready to develop a whole plan without any timetable or financial help...I doubt...
We got some information but...it will be really useful?

You know what I have found if you care about this sort of shit, you become depressed and riddled with anxiety.

I have studied enough of peak oil to be satisfied with my own conclusions about how this will be a major problem, but have now made a conscious effort to not concern myself with it as much as I used to.

I'm envious of those who don't care or want to know about peak oil.

The anxiety will go away - it is  a tough reality for some a challenge for others. Pople care I suspect but they don't have time for it 'just yet'.

You become depressed and riddled with anxiety but then you get over it. It might take a few years. It might actually get worse before it gets better. Then, once you're over it, you're partially immunized for when tshtf.

Also, it's kind of hard to find out about something so dramatic such as Peak Oil that will change everything about the world and about your life, and then just turn around and block it out. It's something that is having effects right now and these are going to worsen dramatically before 2010. It's not like reading that the arctic sea ice will melt by 2020. This is now.
