Another winner from ZeroHedge... The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has released a report "State Tax Changes in Response to the Recession" in which the center notes that "national recession has had such a devastating effect on state finances that states took in $87 billion less in tax revenue from October 2008 through September 2009 than they collected in the previous 12 months. This 11 percent decline, the steepest on record, resulted from the impact on tax collections of lost jobs, reduced wages, and lowered economic activity." http://www.zerohedge.com/article/state-tax-revenues-plummet-87-billion-biggest-year-over-year-decline-history-record-state-ta I'm curious how this can be papered over to allow the 'game' to continue...

Shouldn't it read: "State Tax Revenues Unexpectedly Plummet By $87 Billion..."?

This 11 percent decline, the steepest on recordThere is your true indicator of the state of the economy. Certainly not the BS GDP numbers.

We should just do away with the hypocracy. Just eliminate all taxes. They really are meaningless anyway. Just let the governments roll the printing presses to pay for whatever they want.
It is what they are already doing to a limited degree.

Taxes are a means of control and letting people pretend that they have an influence on what happens. It gives people a false sense that the rich are being punished with taxes so their lives can be better. It is a way of controlling the middle class and lower class requiring them to need governement assistance and get their fair share of the pie.

The problem, at least in part, is the epic disconnect between the services people expect government to provide, and how much the people are willing to pay for said services.
We want the social safety net of Europe and the military of a superpower, yet to pay taxes like Ayn Rand is the head of the Treasury. Doesn't work that way.

Whoa, wait a minute: Ayn Rand is head of the Treasury? Shit, I thought she was dead. Maybe it's John Galt in a bad wig and an ugly dress pretending to be Ayn Rand. Or . . . or maybe I just read something wrong. Why is my . . . why is my screen pulsating and twirling . . . ? And why do my hands look so . . . funny and apelike . . . ?

I think its the tax equivalent of nimbyism really. Some of us dont mind paying for certain things, yet each persons certain things cover way more than is possible to cover. Politicos bought votes with money that isnt there anymore, and pretty much never going to be. Expectations can and wont be met.

My sister and I talked tonight. She lives in Washington state and she said they just got informed there is going to be an $800 million increase in taxes, but just for eleven months. She laughed about that.
