I don't think i will stay on this board long......reason being, there are a lot of people that WERE members who now post as guests, and that indicates something to me that I am not aware of. That sort of attrition is rather strange, and I'd like to get an inkling, so I will probably just watch and see, but it just seems to be unusual....

It's probably just the fact that it can all get a bit overwhelming from time to time, and some people's response is to delete their accounts.
Frequently they will come back after a period of time

Yes many people take breaks... but they come back
Sometimes they get upset with someone.
It is sad when the really good posters allow the grumpy ones to get to them...but it does happen. I have been on for a couple of years now and have witnessed a couple of these "spells".
The grumpy ones eventually leave... when you don't respond to them...  but they usually cause a few good ones to leave along the way.
Just be patient... the good ones will return
Unfortunately, along with some of the grumpy ones who like to argue

'Twas a relatively recent phenomenon, and corrective action was taken to purge a few troublemakers.

Stick around, you might like it.   Smiley

yes i was one of those that 'left' and came back.

Personally i have been at latoc more than 3 years.... and during that time one's cup runneth over with doom at times...... the more you know.... sometimes the harder it gets....  Undecided remember this IS a bit of a DOOM site.... even though some of us are prepping.... there are many stages to it.

The first stage is information assimilation.

Then you tend to personalize it and connect it to your own personal reality.... and make an action plan.

From there you tend to work to both physical, mental and psychological preparation.......

Then you tend to step back from the personal and start to see the BIG PICTURE......

and in a way..... sometimes THAT is when it become most difficult..... when you are living in two worlds.

The BAU (business as usual) world ..... and the latoc world.

I can only say sometimes your own pathway takes you in unexpected directions. For myself..... I did not want to be HARD... I do not support the philosophy that you need to be thick skinned and armed and dangerous to be a survivor or thriver in LIFE AFTER THE OIL CRASH.

Once in a while this site goes through stages where asshats become a higher concentration than usual and well people like me fall off the wagon. In hindsight deleting one's account really is the only recount at times..... it WOULD be useful if one could 'deactivate' rather than delete....

SO sorry for the long post but seriously... your perception that there is something inherently 'wrong' with this site would be just an observation specific in it's timing when a lot of people probably hit the same toxic asshat overload at the same time. I do believe a cascading effect happened as well.... you know.....all your favourite posters left so it possibly added to the whole.

Can is suggest read for a time..... and WELCOME to latoc. I have learned so much from Matt's site and to be completely fair.... i would say a significant number of members here are NOT crazy nutcases or anything ...... in fact i can suggest go here...... as a start!

I've been reading the board for a year or so.

I wouldn't get too bothered about people leaving.  People are worked up in general.  they are not at thier best.

The economy crashed.  If unemployment and wealth destruction has not touched you, it has played havoc with someone you know.

Times are tough and looking to get tougher.  This is the experience of bumping along at the top of peak oil

The slide down the other side will be much worse.

Emotions can run very high on this forum, but I find the practical discussion of how to deal with everyday doom invaluable.  I've found a range of discussion here I haven't found elsewhere.  There are smart people here, but I don't feel like I have to have an engineering degree to get involved in a discussion.  Plus, most of them are quite fun to talk to.
