http://www.freep.com/article/20091122/NEWS06/911220433/1322/Michigan-jobless-crowd-state-aid-officesThe impact of a battered economy fills the crowded waiting room of the Department of Human Services office in Madison Heights, where welfare caseworkers are swamped trying to meet the needs of unemployed people -- many of them new to the notion of asking the government for help. Tom and Wanda Francis came last week for assistance to avoid an electricity shutoff in their Auburn Hills townhouse. They couldn't get through on the phone line, so they drove to Madison Heights and waited four hours to hand paperwork to a worker at the counter, afraid it would be lost in the drop box.

It's important that people realize it's not getting better and won't get better until things get changed by force, and by the victims of Capitalism.

Of course it will, people will do what they need to survive, and some will go too far and destroy themselves taking many down with them. You do what you can and that will inspire others to do likewise.

Where's here? The whole state, or Detroit? What is the crime statistic? Also, if it's not that bad yet (crime wise), maybe that's because the unemployment benefits are still being mailed. Too bad many will waste much of it buying junk for their kids to be poisoned, both mentally and physically, by Chinese junk.

The slow death of the auto industry, both suppliers and manufacturers is slowing killing this state. People are moving away to find work and the tax base is in a nosedive.... This will not end well.

What happened to detroit (ppl fleeing the D for the 'burbs) is now going to happen to Michigan as a whole. People are going to leave for other states. Only this time, the grass doesnt look much greener anywhere else.
Michigan has always been the kind of place you wanted to move away from. Even during the best of times, the Michigan "brain drain" was well documented. Now that the heavy industry is gone, whats the point of being there? Its a high tax state yet the state gov't is silent about lowering taxes in any way. I guess its futile to even try, because the tax base is vanishing before their eyes.
We are only in the 3rd or 4th inning . Most real estate is expected to drop another 40%+ from current levels. Crime is up. Alot more burglaries and armed robberies even in the better suburbs. Cops are getting layed off and most city offices are open 4 days a week instead of five. Its viscous cycle big time.
People in power here are still deluded, they have no new ideas. Governor Granholm keeps yapping about Michigan becoming a renewable energy mecca, but nothing can happen when you're broke. I'd like to see all govt employees give up their ridiculous cushy retirement benefits. Where is their sacrifice? In my township, for example, the elected officials get a full retirtement package after just 5-8 of service. All property taxes go up every year, no matter what the market value is practically. Its getting uglier quick. You can feel it dropping every day.
Eventually, there should be some dirt cheap farmsteads to be had here.
