Thought I'd post this and see if it's been discussed no LATOC, so what happens if we loose freedom on the net? and how exactly do they control or keep track of all this stuff (btw I'm not only a newbie here but have only been on line for about 10 months)

Friggin' Brits! I wonder if they can actually see their freedoms in their rear view mirrors? Big Brother is real.

Things have been going this direction for years, and in many countries. A while back I started up a thread to address the topic of technical countermeasures to government surveillance and the loss of net privacy:

http://www.doomers.us/forum2/index.php/topic,56412.0.html

...but as you can see, the response was generally either "who cares?", or "you can't beat them, so don't bother". Pathetic how docile we've become isn't it?  Sad

It gets better: http://www.boingboing.net/2009/11/19/breaking-leaked-uk-g.html

It's time to ditch CorporateNet in favor of the Darknets, which I first heard of here on LATOC:

The average consumer will be inconvenienced, taxed, and occasionally oppressed and robbed.
The average would-be pirate will be frustrated and possibly arrested.
The smart pirate won't notice a thing.
The smart internet user will become a pirate.

Its been discussed here before.  Moral of the story, the internet is new, wildly unregulated, and thats why the people love it and its great.  Make no mistake, they will find a way to sink their claws into it and ruin it, they will find a way to extract every single dollar they can from you.  They won't stop fighting until they finally own it, or control it to a degree that is to their liking, its only a matter of time, enjoy it the way it is while you can.

Isnt this more or less what happened here years ago when they started clamping down on music sharing? Our rights in the USA are just as endangered. Though I never have supported the right to copy and distribute someone elses work I do fear where these types of laws will take the net.

Everyone in England should go out of their way to download music and movies. Let the government disconnect entire cities worth of people. Their business masters Mr ISP will scream rape and realize that was a boner move. Then big brother will start fining people. Sorry Guv'nor, Im unemployed. You'll have to toss my ass in the jug. Opps, the jug is full, now what the hell do we do? Ok house arrest but no internet for you. Opps, that just screwed MR ISP out of another customer.  Oh dear, he's lost too many customers to keep going and now he's out of business. Hmmm, the bankers just called and said Mr ISP owes them Billions. He can't  pay, now what?

And so on and so on. Its a pity that we the average putz can't get our collective shit together in one sack. We could screw them up sooooo bad.
