Obama Blocks Climate Change Agreement, Stefan Steinberg.
The inability of the major capitalist powers to agree to any effective countermeasures is rooted in two factors, both inherent in the capitalist system.
First, though climate change is a global problem that requires a global solution, international cooperation is prevented by the conflicting interests of different nation-states. These conflicts have been intensified by the economic crisis...
The US and Chinese administrations accuse one another of maintaining cheap currencies to further their interests, and both countries are involved in tit-for-tat punitive trade sanctions.
Similar rivalries are growing between other leading world economies. Every major power fears that any concession with regard to environmental protection could disadvantage its domestic business interests in the furious struggle for the domination of world markets.
Second, a rational, scientific response to climate change is blocked by the subordination of every aspect of economic and social life to the principle of private profit and the interests of the corporate and financial elite...
The failure of major capitalist nations to undertake any serious measures to combat growing environmental dangers is an indictment of the capitalist system. It is also a blow to all those environmentalists and “Greens” who argue that it is possible to pressure capitalist governments to undertake “environmentally friendly” policies.

I know, a bunch of people here don't even think there is a climate change or thathumans are the cause of it, if it actually exists. But Obama supporters put forward his supposed committment to this issue as a reason to support him.

 I believe that global warming/climate change is occurring and that it will lead to extreme consequences. I also believe that if the money that was thrown away on the bank bailouts had been thrown at the energy problem we could of made significant strides at new renewable energy sources. I am one of those who believes that technology could give us whole new methods of dealing with the energy problem. However, the immense amounts of monies needed for R&D will never be forked over. Solving the energy problem would throw all the oil companies down the hole and they can't have that........................Bruce

Check out the pissed off ex-Obama supporters in the comments here. It's a piece about DiFazio calling for Geithner and Summers to be tossed: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/18/rep-defazio-fire-timmy-ge_n_363093.html

Team O---Where reelection is job #1 and every issue and supporter will be thrown under the campaing bus to achieve job #1.  What is funny too me is how y'all will flock to him in 2012 like a battered spouse standing by their man.  Not that the Republicans will offer anyone worth considering either.

MilDad, I think you are a cool guy, but I gotta ask, who did you vote for when Bush ran for his second term?

Funny thing...I totally agree with your first and third sentences, but then your second sentence makes me want to shout, "fuck you!" even though I see little chance that I will be voting for Obama in 2012 or likely voting at all.

Those yeast cells, they sure liked to eat;
To do it, they might even cheat.
The urge was so strong,
It swept all along;
No government form could compete.

When we realize we're doomed after Obama's term, can we all finally give up on voting?  I don't get why any of you pay attention to politics the way you do.  Just ignore these people!  They will do what they do whether you are watching or not!  The more you participate, the further along this nonsense system is perpetuated.  Get your land, farm it, learn skills, build community.  Slowly acclimate yourself to a life without their fiat currency.  In short - actively create the alternative.

Just walk away from these jokers! Just-walk-a-way. They are not your lords, your bosses, your leaders, unless you accept the subjugation.

I remember SO many people who were pissed I wasn't voting for Obama.  I laugh at them all now.  The sad thing is that next election, they'll fall right back into the same cycle of thinking that they have to vote for the lesser of two evils and that MAYBE it will actually change something.  Roll Eyes

I already see that, Pacifica's commentators seem determined to "give Obama a chance" no matter what, they invested so heavily in promoting him they'd feel like they have zero legitimacy if they were to turn on him.

Seriously, people thought he was going to be the next MLK or JFK or something, and he's just another lame corporate duck.  I think the Great Black Hope will go down in history as the Great Black Hype.  Wink

I voted for him.  I don't regret it, even now.  I viewed it as the one last slim chance America had of pulling its head out of its ass.  Besides, it was just a vote.  Didn't cost me anything.  He'll go down in history as Obama-chev, although I doubt America's demise as a superpower will be nearly and bloodless as was The Soviet Union's.   Shocked

Pam, I ain't MilDad, but I have to raise my hand in shame and admit I voted for ole' George W. Dumbfuck ...... twice.  BUT - I just have to sit back and shake my head while watching everyone that sing the praises of Obama and actually BELIEVE all that Hope and Change bull shit.  I know there is nothing I can say to teach them the harsh lessons I learned from my Bush revelation, only time will reveal the truth to them - or not (most Bush supporters are still in denial, so why would Obama's be any different).  All that said, I think I am done voting.  Why waste my time voting against someone all the time.  Elections are like a coin toss where if it is heads we lose and if it is tails we lose. Cheesy

Edit to add:  Besides, all my vote had ever done is to cancel out my wife's. Cheesy
