I got this glass, 150lb weight per sheet. I got the 4x4 supports and the free services of a professional glazier (who supplied the glass and big box of industrial mastic).

Looking forward to having a lexan reinforced greenhouse for free, bragging photos will be posted once this is done. Looking to build it with a hinged vent flap top and bottom and the thought to have a battery powered forced air system so it could be converted to a giant solar dehydrator with a few flaps opened and closed in the right places.

Been planning this since may, roll on the weekend.

I'd love to see pics.  Greenhouse is high up on my to-do list.  The giant dehydrator sounds like a great add on.

The idea is to have a long hinged flap at the bottom south facing edge made of plywood and a similar flap at the top north facing edge. When flaps are open cold air will enter at the base, heat, rise and evacuate to top north.

The forced system will be to cut holes in the base flap and mastic 12 volt computer fans  into the holes then run from battery (hopefully in the future solar charged). Btw these aren't little fans these are suck in a cat and spit out as catnuggets jobs.

I am really looking forward to seeing this take shape in reality rather than just mental plans.

can't wait to see the pics Jock!!! Congrats!
just got done putting plastic on our greenhouse for the winter. I'd love to come across some free or cheap windows to use to replace the plastic with.

First panels constructed, 600lb of glass in this pic alone. They will have to sit for a week till the industrial mastic cures. Once the initial structure is up it appears that more by accident than design it will be very modular in nature, an absolute breeze to construct additional panels and bolt on without deconstructing the original build.

Thanks for the pics.  Very nice.  Where did you find the big computer fans?

A very nice man who runs our local recycling centre puts aside all interesting computer and gardening stuff for me in exchange for never having to pay extortianate prices for pc repairs for the office and his personal systems. Win win situation. What started out as a business relationship has developed into a sound friendship.

Where did you get the glass?

I have about 5 old sliding glass doors left over from tearing down a weird building the former owners of my place built.

Probably not enough for a greenhouse, I think you idea is way cool, but I was thinking of using them for a seedling bed.  To get some seedlings started in like Feb and then transplant later in the spring.  Rather than buy seedlings from the nursery.

wow Jock, that's going to be great!
I hope to be able to eventually put glass on our little greenhouse so I don't have to replace plastic every year!
good working relationship this your friend too. that's about as valuable as that greenhouse is going to be! LOL

How about polycarbonate, Pam? (We're still at the planning stage.) Yes, plastic is a pain if you are in a windy area, which most of us are from time to time. Glass breaks, unless you are lucky enough to be Jock with a ready supply. We have friends who went from plastic to polycarbonate and they LOVE it. Really strong. If a panel does break or blow out, you replace it, etc. It's undoubtedly more expensive than glass. Have you investigated this?
