From the Guardian (UK)

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/nov/09/peak-oil-international-energy-agency

Quote
The world is much closer to running out of oil than official estimates admit, according to a whistleblower at the International Energy Agency who claims it has been deliberately underplaying a looming shortage for fear of triggering panic buying.

Quote
A second senior IEA source, who has now left but was also unwilling to give his name, said a key rule at the organisation was that it was "imperative not to anger the Americans" but the fact was that there was not as much oil in the world as had been admitted. "We have [already] entered the 'peak oil' zone. I think that the situation is really bad," he added.

Quote
John Hemming, the MP who chairs the all-party parliamentary group on peak oil and gas, said the revelations confirmed his suspicions that the IEA underplayed how quickly the world was running out and this had profound implications for British government energy policy.

PO gets another mention in the MSM. There's a huge government advertising campaign "Act on CO2" encouraging the public to reduce emissions for the sake of the environment. It would appear that climate change is a rather more palatable reason than peak oil to encourage energy conservation without scaring the electorate.

LOL, yes and no, I guess. I think I could make an argument either way. Personally, it's way too late now suckers, should've listened to that humanitarian Jimmy Carter back in the 70's....but Noooooo.

Nah, only a conspiracy theorist would think governments are shutting down the economy, as a back door way of dealing with PO. No-one saw this coming. It just "happened" through sheer, bureaucratic inertia, in which case the charge is one of incompetence.   - Slow Dazzle

As per the article, its very interesting, yet not surprising.  I kind of hope we can speed up the old doom clock.  I can't find a job right now, and instead of dropping off resumes to do bullshit, monkey work, I'd rather be waiting out the starving MZBs before switching to a life of full time farming and foraging.

Funny, when I am more optimistic about post crash life than pre crash life.

(And yes, I realize I might die, but that doesn't bother me much).

Wouldn't want people to ditch their 401k or get prepped.

So now we have I guess peak figures as well.  Is this new speak for counting BBL that never got pumped or delivered?

Some quite impressive news just before the IEA releases its 2009 report. The article includes information about two whistleblowers who claim the USA had pressured the IEA to downplay decline rates of existing fields and inflate chances of new discoveries, in an effort to avoid mentioning how close we are to peak oil for fear of panicking the financial markets and the masses. One of the sources believes we have already entered the peak oil zone.

Looks like fun times ahead then everyone! Grin

My takeaway was that the previously insanely optimistic numbers would be revised down to merely stupidly optimistic....

Nice catch!

I have a feeling that PO is going to be a bigger and faster issue than even a lot of people familiar with the term expect.
