There's no need to go in immediately.  I'd say it would be a last resort kind of decision, right?  If you can't get a real job in a few months, then start looking into joining the armed forces or herding sheep or growing marijuana.  Why would you give up all your freedom unless you actually had no other choice?

It's almost like saying, "On the one hand, I could lead a reasonably happy, fulfilling life with plenty of money to do whatever I want to do after work.  On the other hand, I could lose most of my freedom and get paid only a tiny amount, in order to further the goals of TPTB by helping to conquer indigenous peoples who stubbornly resist factory farming."

There was just a wee bit of truth in Kissinger's infamous quote about military men: "Military men are dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns for foreign policy."

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I have decided not to join. The main reason being that the minimum contract is for 9 years as a Construction Engineer. Even assuming a very slow collapse, I will very likely never get out.

I have decided that whatever TSHTF means or looks like, I will go through it with family and friends, and not with the military.
