From this week's issue of The Nation come some eye-opening stats, at least eye-opening if you're not a doomer:

Quote

These are not happy days for America's young and striving. Indeed, as the economy has rocked and tumbled its way through 2009, spewing jobs like a sea-sick tourist, these have become very, very bad days. In September, the unemployment rate for people between the ages of 16 and 24 hovered morosely at 18.1 percent, nearly double the national average for that month. At the same time, the actual employment rate for 16- to 24-year-olds dropped to a startling 46 percent, the grimmest such figure on record since 1948, the year the government began keeping track. Taken together, this same group of young people has lost more than 2.5 million jobs since the economy began deflating in December 2007, roughly one-third of all the jobs lost, making them the hardest-hit age group of the recession.

And it gets bleaker. Bad as the youth unemployment numbers are, the underemployment numbers are even more distressing, with young people once again taking the hit. During the second quarter of 2009, for instance, the underemployment rate for workers under 25 was an alarming 31.9 percent; for workers between 25 and 34 the underemployment rate was 17.1 percent.

And, according to an article posted esterday, the military says that a large portion of this same age group is too fat/dumb/drug addled to serve in the armed forces.

This is a catastrophic long term problem that very few in the MSM are talking about.  As I recall, massive long term unemployment among young adults was a big factor in the major riots that happened in Athens.  Wonder how long before the pot boils over here?

This is where Obomba's civilian conservation corps comes in Matty.

My daughter is about to enter this work force...

Frankly - I will gladly pay her not to.

Not likely a problem . . .  because . . .

a large portion of this same age group is too fat/dumb/drug addled to ________ (fill in the blank)

Zero = Zero.

Well, lets see, if they are hungry, they are no longer fat ...give it time...we are still eating from the buffet...not waiting by the dumpster...

Might be awhile. Since they've just extended UE benefits. Looks like these folks will only be getting fatter, dumber, lazier, and more drug addled. There will be no riots as long as "free" money is rolling into their new stay-at-home lifestyle.

One issue with unemployment for that age group is that at some point they must have been employed solidly to collect it...otherwise they get nothing.

You seriously think people get fat off unemployment benefits? Don't count out Americans, though they need to throw off their  political shackles, including those of the "left/progressive" politicos.

I dont mind unemployment in the least, every worker has paid into that system the amount you would take out many times over...it's...INSURANCE...against shit like this happening. Extending the benefits kinds of gives us a feel for how bad it is and how bad it is going to get.

Imagine what it would be like without it. I am a hater of welfare, big time, but right now, that is keeping people from robbing and looting anyone and everyone around them for food. When that system stops we are truly in a different world.
