I'm thinking that a CB radio will be useful when cell phones no longer work. And it would be great if it charged using a hand crank. I saw the Midland Base Camp CB radio, but it doesn't get good reviews. Any ideas?

How about looking for a good hand-cranked 12-volt charger and battery that you can use to operate any 12 volt item, then use the CB of your choice?

Yeah, I second that.

Get a good CB radio, decent battery, and figure out how to charge it/keep it charged
rather than yet still another single-purpose electrical device.

I just posted a bit of info on the Eton FR1000 post which has GMRS capabilities as well as solar & crank. Hoping to get my wife to get for me this xmas Smiley. For a solar panel to give the 12v I'm liking the one on Amazon that comes in briefcase form.

The prob with any comm system is gonna be how to supply power. There are lots of crank up receivers on the market - the larger Freeplay radios are amongst my favorites.

Transmitting with homemade power is more problematic because of increased power drain.

Don't expect just to chat up a storm - schedules are good things.  The few CB radios that I have  to distribute in a grid down situation have a flyer specifying time and channel for local nets and about half a page about network protocol and message handling.

Planning is the key to success.
