I got a chance to go to the Saturday night screening/Q&A and was lucky enough to shake his hand and thank him for waking me up to peak oil.  In my opinion, the movie was great and getting to meet him was just a super cool bonus.

Everyone should see it and spread the word.

That's great!  Was he doing crowd control again or were the ushers on top of things?

The ushers were trying their best, but no one listened to them.  When Mike spoke, people listened  Wink  He told everyone to meet him outside so others could come in for the next show.  I stuck around about 15 minutes just to shake his hand and get a pic with him.  I have no idea how long he stayed there since I left after to give him some space.  He was getting crowded by everyone trying to get him to autograph stuff or talk about news sources  Tongue

I can't believe that I still didn't get to see this movie, yet.
Damn it, I'm willing to pay, I'm willing to compromise - why the hell can't I see it?

I think you guys might get a kick out of reading some of this stuff at the local firearm forum. Recently, the site added a 'preparedness' section in which you'll find some rather interesting tidbits. Including, at present, a little thread on Collapse. I like to check it out sometimes to soak up the perspective vis a vis the preparedness discussed here.

Thanks for the link aslinged.  It's good to hear other preppers talking outside of the LATOC forum.  Not to mention how some people STILL think that high oil prices will always drop back down without considering what will happen when SUPPLY starts to dwindle to the point where anybody who wants oil can't get it.

Saw it last night...it fully lived up to my expectations.  An excellent documentary and a fine character study of someone who fights the good fight knowing full well how little reward (and what great cost) comes with it.  It is probably the best brief and succinct overview of the current and most probably future situation.  There are more artful ones out there, but this pretty much just gets right to the point.  If it was available on DVD already and if I thought that any of the few normal BAU people I still know could be motivated by ANYTHING, I'd bundle this and What a Way to Go: Life at the End of Empire together and hand them out to all my mostly-clueless friends for Christmas.

There were all of about 25 people in attendance and the majority of them seemed to be the type who already knew the gist of what the movie covered, but there were a couple people that looked pretty demoralized when they were walking out the door.  That is the funny thing about Chicago: the level of complacency here is pretty amazing...this is a city full of incredibly spoiled and oblivious people who have no idea how quickly things can go straight to hell.  Must be something in all the lattes they drink.  I'm glad to hear that it has been well received elsewhere.  Frankly, if local boy Roger Ebert had not reviewed it, I doubt anyone would have shown up.

My feelings about it: overall it is an impressive piece of work that will be almost entirely ignored by the people who most need to see it.

Damn! I wish we would have done a Chicago meet-up to see the movie. I know there are a handful of us on here. The Musicbox Theater is cool and we could have hit Cullen's next door for a drink!!!

I ended up taking a friend to see it (and eat dinner) for his birthday.  ("Happy birthday...we're all gonna die!")  Another semi-local LATOCer had mentioned getting a local crew together, but I ended up connecting with my friend on this exclusively as we have been friends for 30 years and almost never get a chance to hang out together.

Ended up eating at a Sushi place about a block or so down the road...which was not bad at all.

Just watched "Collapse" tonight with my wife.  For those interested, it might be on your "Pay-Per-View" channel.  We have Time Warner Cable and it was on PPV here for $3.99 or something.  It was a very good documentary.  It was funny seeing some of the same stock footage that was featured in "A Crude Awakening".  I liked that it pretty much pinned all of the problems on energy and the concepts of net energy return and entropy.  I'm guessing the film would be a bit too intellectual for the unwashed masses..they want to watch mindless shit like 2012 or another CGI Disney film.  I'm glad it is getting some attention though, and I completely agree with Ruppert's conclusions.  His observation, which is mind numbingly obvious, that all populations & resources go through the same development cycle (birth, growth, maturity, decline, death) is probably too much for the average Joe.  Nobody wants to believe that this population trend is unsustainable.

Great film that will be well received by this community, but probably overlooked by much of the rest of the population.  Interesting to note that Roger Ebert took an interest in the film (as mentioned in the main forum here), and says as much in his review:

Saw the movie.....
It seemed much more geared towards people who have a foundation of the science of doom, or those who are already "believers."
Not really a tool to convince the sheeple.
Much more a the story of a doomer spending his life attempting to expose the direction the world is going only to reach a total collapse in his own life.

It was quite interesting imho, although I do believe that the average zombie that gets a hold of this flick will think this man is a total Lunatic.

Ruppert makes no attempt to debate any of the issues, and describes why he has given up the debate. He is missing some hard coded facts and deals more with the effects of PO and Corrupt government.

The end of the movie was totally sad....

I wonder when we will be able to buy the DVD.  I need this video to show to people. I hope they hurry it up.
