Thought I would show off my great chicken breeding skills!  You see I've managed to take recognizable breeds that have useful characteristics and turned them into fuzzy spike headed weirdos.  They don't even act normal.  Most chickens come running to get food.  These guys see me feeding and run for the hills in a panic like they are wild jungle fowl.  Do the hens lay many eggs?  Who knows?  Is the meat good?  NO!  It has that black sheen caused from silkie chicken genes also known in gourmet circles as chinese black chicken.  But gourmets also eat crap I use as algae in my fish tank.   But they are cute!  I've had a hard time shooting them because they are so tiny and cute so I will probably sell them instead.

Very funny HungryRaven! I plan on doing some breeding this Spring, and I will probably create cute mutts as well.  Wink

I wanted a few Buckeyes but haven't gotten any yet. I only have one roo, a Black Copper Marans. It is interesting watching him with the ladies, some of them run screaming when they see him, and two run to greet him. The BCM hen ignores him, but the Wellsummer and the Golden Wyandotte love to hang with him. I will have to do a breeding cage to get the BCM eggs, but the other girls are already fertile, it's just too soon to try hatching any eggs.

I plan on getting a hen which woiuld be good to breed, one that will sit on the eggs until they hatch.  Can anyone recommend a type of chicken that will sit on the eggs.  I understand that most are bred these days to just produce eggs and are not good brooders.

I hear Silkies make great brooder hens, but mine ended up being roos, so have no personal experience with them.

Silkies are, but most of the heirloom breeds are pretty good layers. I'm already chasing Gold Lace Wyandottes off the nest boxes. Buckeyes are supposed to be good setters, too.

Thanks so much, I will look for Wyandotts or Buckeyes or Silkies.
