Ukraine flu(?) outbreak - viral pneumonia - quarantines

I'm not sure why this doctor from the Ukraine would say that what he saw in adults was a mixture of H1N1 and parainfluenza or why that would make it particularly deadly

My take on it was that he meant the H1N1 had done one of its little gene-swap fests with a parainfluenza virus, like the way we were discussing a few pages back.. in other words, we have a new super-flu..

But isn't that what's called "reassortment"?  And Niman, WHO and others are saying it hasn't reassorted, but that there are small mutations in its genes - especially for the 225 amino acid.  In fact, I think I read that virologists who are studying it specifically for it's ability to reassort (swap genes with other viruses) were surprised to find that it doesn't reassort easily at all.  So I'm wondering about the reliability of this report from the coroner in the Ukraine that it has reassorted with a parainfluenza virus.

Agreed..  but sometimes things get lost or dumbed down in translation, the extent depending on the translators knowledge and vocabulary..  however.. it's wait'n'see time again, I guess..

Yeah, just the idea that the mutation seems to give it more affinity for lung tissue is worrisome.  We sure don't need it to be doing any gene swapping too.

Read somewhere Ukraine picked it up from central america over the summer.

This looks solid, it's not just some moronic blogger spreading rumors.  In fact it corresponds to what the Indian pathologists were saying, if I remember correctly.  I guess he must have said something about the "mix of swine and parainfluenza" in an earlier interview, I don't know what he meant by that.

This is also solid, not some garbage from prisonplanet but rather from experts in the field.  They really don't know if the mutation they found is definitely one that causes greater virulence, they only found it in three samples, and it doesn't seem to be spreading in the general population as far as they know at this time.
