If you are following this ...the chatter is "it is highly unlikely the WHO is sending a team for 30 deaths"....something is going on over there...

ETA...chart of illness in Ukraine on Flutracker...shows 497 children...197 adults currently hospitalized...http://tinyurl.com/yaywl4v

Wow.
Now this sounds like huge, bad news. Makes me wonder how this one is going to play with (swineflu-)H1N1 and it's vaccine. It also makes me want to put on my tinfoil hat and think about whether this is how we are going to be culled.

Below is the latest from Dr. Niman on the Ukraine situation.

WHO Team to Investigate Ukraine H1N1 Outbreaks
Recombinomics Commentary 23:43
October 30, 2009

http://www.recombinomics.com/News/10300903/Ukraine_WHO.html

Gregory Hartl said the team was being pulled together by the WHO's Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network, which goes by the acronym GOARN.

The team will travel early next week to the eastern European country, which has closed schools and banned public meetings in response to a spike in cases of acute respiratory illness believed to be H1N1.

"This is something that certainly needs investigating," Hartl said from Geneva.

He said the government of Ukraine is being forthcoming with information on the outbreak, which is said to centre on three regions in the western part of the country.

The above comments describe a WHO investigational team being formed in response to the outbreak in Ukraine (see map).  Although the story is evolving, some reports describe a dramatic spread of the virus to 80,000 people, with as many as 100 fatalities.  The early reports describing 100 fatalities mentioned 10,000 infections, which would create an alarming case fatality rate of 1%.  The newer cases would lower the rate, assuming the most recent cases don't follow the pattern described in the first 10,000 cases.

Media reports included descriptions of blood filled lungs, raising visions of the 1918 pandemic, which also involved swine H1N1 that jumped to humans and was efficiently transmitted.  Samples have already been sent to London for analysis, and immediate release of initial sequence data would be useful.

Small changes can have dramatic effects when viruses jump species, and the rapid spread of the H1N1 in western Ukraine is clearly cause for concern.

I made a thread in tinfoil, basically summarizing the info from this thread and adding some tin to it. Please join in, if you're willing to "go there" Wink

Oh, and thanks Satori. That headline makes me cringe.

thanks for the link Satori

lots of interesting stuff in the news there - I'm certainly no expert on what life might be like in the Ukraine but just wondering if anyone noticed any of the other none-flu headlines over there - wonder if there might be a connection?

other articles from the same news site (FWIW)

One reason for large-scale disease might be sudden cold snap, when a week ago Halychyna was covered with snow and frost. According to another version, wage earners, who brought the virus from abroad, are guilty of it.

If memory serves, isn't Ukraine also having very difficult economic problems and also has very high rates of alcoholism?

Flutrackers has a thread on this:
http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/showthread.php?s=38e4d340c4a16ae97d7afc44ddaeab05&t=130657

My take on this - as a medic: watch this situation carefully. It is difficult to be certain early on. False alarms are a definite possibility. But if this is mutated A/H1N1 flu, then it is definitely time to re-assess your vulnerabilities again.

Check out Google Flu Trends for Ukraine:
http://www.google.org/flutrends/intl/en_us/ua/

No apparent sky-rocketing. But 48 deaths, all over the last two weeks.

Compare this with the US:
http://www.google.org/flutrends/intl/en_us/us/

Compare that with my own country:
http://www.google.org/flutrends/intl/en_us/no/

There is no sky-rocketing, and only 13 deaths so far, most over the last two months.

This makes a "new mutation"/"other disease" more likely in my mind.
