Hunter, the question was if we expect to survive PO ...... I believe there will be a slow crash, and there will thus be time for functional societies to adapt.  There may be some hunger and malnutrtion in the US (as there is a little right now), but I think the actual deaths from starvation will come from some thirdworld countries who can't afford the staples like rice.

We can learn to live like them (cheap starch du jour with little bits of veggies) but they can't live with less than what they have now.

Boiler, I very much believe in standard medicine.  In my experience, it's much more effective than alternative medicine - but there are still some benefits to alternative meds such as ginger or marijuana.

Therefore shall her plagues come in one day: death, mourning and famine; and she shall be utterly burned... And the kings of the earth shall bewail her, standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgement come.

+100 to Black Hunter's posts. I couldn't have stated it any better. I figure I'll have to live the hybrid life of the rat and the shaman to survive a total collapse scenario. I could only do it with the hope of helping others that make it through the bottleneck.

I am with James on the longevity aspect. One day at a time, enjoying the moments that I can. I am at peace with it. I hope to die in an erect or meditative position. I'll look death in the eye on the way out.

I guess we'll find out.  I believe what I believe, based on expert evidence, but one of the things I believe is that what I believe may not come to pass.

On the other hand, i'd say things have been deteriorating very fast, lately.  Every facet, every crises we are experiencing, you keep hearing the same thing - "It's going much faster than we anticipated."  And the further things deteriorate, the more non-linear, domino effects will spin off in all directions, i'm guessing, precisely because none of these things we're up against are linear in nature.  Have you seen the "Modified Hubbert's Peak" or whatever they call it?  Using the latest evidence, the cumulative effects of what's going on, some experts are now predicting the far side of the peak to be a cliff rather than a slope.

But, I believe in a slow crash lately, too.  Greer predicts this - it will take a century or more.  Problem is, I think Greer's wrong in basing his predictions on historical precedent - there is no historical precedent for the past industrial/technological century.  Just as importantly, or more so to me, i think he has his time lines wrong.  He looks at his "start time" for the crash around Peak Oil, whereas I would argue our collapse began a century or more ago already, and what we're experiencing now could actually be the onset of our final death throes, not the first.  Slow crash, yes - beginning at least a century ago with Peak Oil perhaps delivering the coup de grace.

Ah, now tBH, you've gone and depressed the hell out of me. That's just a stark, naked thought, y'know - all defense, justification, placidity, peace of mind gets ripped right out of my skull. Mainly because, it makes too damned much sense. *sigh* I need a drink.  Undecided

Sorry, man!  I could be wrong.

But hey, this is doom central, right?  Wink

At any rate, however long it takes, there is little doubt that things have been collapsing for a long time now.  Ask the Sioux, or the Nez Perce.  Or E.O. Wilson, or Peter Mathiessen...

Yup, I don't intend to just survive, I intend to PROSPER.

My plan is to be the local Warlord around these here parts and bend all the locals to my will.  As I will need many minions to work my fields, dontcha' know.

You just can't let a good crisis go to waste.  I can finally fulfill all my megalomaniacal fantasies!

Stop being a bunch of pansies REACTING to the collapse.  Cowboy up and take advantage of the situation.  Only the most ruthless and organized will survive.

Face it.  There is NO FEMA helicoptor or nice Red Cross lady coming to help you.  You are going to have to jump on board with the nearest badass or you will be long pork.  Sorry, that's just how every societal collapse in recorded human history has happened.  How do you think this will be different?

So stop being lazy and start reading.  Here is a GREAT website someone on this forum directed me to.

And take some notes, you will need them.

I've got over and acre of coffee, the mayor is my neighbor, and I'm a high mucky muck in the gun club.

Now that we have medical marijuana, the price has collapsed.  We'll see if Fat Freddy was right.

You mean it might be easier to be the MZB than the subsistance farmer?   By skimming through the last 4000 years of history I thought it was always the people out in the middle of nowhere that were the most prosperous.
