A really good comprehensive book for a beginner (and expert) is Barbara Damrosch's "Garden Primer".  Lots of very good introductory information.  It is always a handy reference for general questions and a good start.

There are lots of knowledgeable people here with very firm opinions.  Ask away!

I have that book also.  It is great and covers all kinds of gardening stuff!

I'm sort of new to them, but so far they've been good: henryfields.com

Books... trial and error... friends and neighbors... each have their place.  I think spending time with those who are experienced is the best teacher.  Best wishes with your preparations.

You're in L.A., right Moore?  My friend there has a small garden behind his apartment that is fairly successful.  Find a good nursery and they should have a chart listing the growing seasons for various plants.

The basics of gardening are fairly intuitive, and I think you should just shit your pants, jump in and swim.  You'll encounter problems along the way which LATOCers are more than happy to help you with, and you will learn from your mistakes.

I totally fucked up all my squash this year, but after realizing what went wrong, I feel like next year I'll do a lot better.  It's kind of trial and error.
