My friend, that is one sweet hull form. I also noticed for the first time that the two sides are not joined at the keel. I gather you will plate that later once everything has settled down from all the welding and bending stresses?  I have to admire anyone who can weld aluminum. Thats one thing I've not managed yet. I picked up a Miller welding machine which can be set up for wire feed aluminum but haven't even had a chance to try it on mild steel yet. One more task for this winter. Espina is coming out of the water next week, we pulled the mast yesterday. (oh what fun, raining, freezing and winds of 40-45 knots, gusting to 50)

I have a lot of dry rot around the cabin base, and some serious welding to do, so this winter she will be shrink wrapped, and I'll move my welder down along with my 220V genny. Time to fix all the niggly little things.

Anyway, keep us up to date on your build eh?

Upload your pics to photobucket, and then link to them in your posts.

Incredible build - how the hell do you weld aluminium anyway? And do you need to wear a respirator?

No need for respirator. The weld fume is not too bad (and the building is quite big)

Had 2 girls helping me this weekend. work today and sail around world later :-)
they were quite good.

The mods do allow it..  but there is only so much storage space available, unfortunately, the space allocated for uploads is already full, and it's more important to save the rest for peoples posts..  if you want to have pictures in your posts, sign up for a free account at http://photobucket.com/ and use the (img) tags to include them like this..  (click on the quote button in the upper right area of this post and you'll see how to include pics in your post)

Thanks, Hopefully finish by late next year. It depends how many hands i get to help me finish up this  project. And besides..... A bad day sailing is better than a good day at work! :-)

No so offtopic.

I bet most of you have seen waterworld by kevin costner, but does it exist other kind of nautical movies over the same theme?

Not that I'm aware of and I'm a prolific movie watcher. I think water world was unique in its concept of doom. There are a few books out there dealing with sailing and nuclear war but thats the only movie of a water based doom I can think of.

The work is coming along very nicely Zeyang, you've got a few more strakes on from the last time I looked.

My sailing is finished for another year, we finished hauling out on friday, and Its time to wrap them up for the winter. 6 months of snow and ice to look forward to. Next highlight is the boat show in January. Going to be expensive again this year.

Thanks, Have to go back and see waterworld again then :-) My wet dream would be to building two identical hulls of same size, weld some heavy hinged t-bars in between and voila - A big cat with plenty of space for 15 people :-).
A little strange looking cat but could be possible Ofcourse need to take out some 3-4 tonns of lead in each hull. What you gain is actually one big boat who  can if needed split easily and sail in each direction. ahh well.

You mentioned books. Any book around doomsday and nautical i should read?
anyway,  a little offtopic. Back to boatbuilding..

If you were to split that hypothetical cat you'd suddenly have an urgent need for all that lead ballast again.. not such a good idea, in my opinion..  Grin

You have a point there.  Not sure how to solve that yet.
waterballast maybe? hmm, need to think about it. Never seen such a construction before.
Maybe 2 separate hulls moving in convoy is a better option, but you loose the space in the middle when you have 2 separate hulls. I saw this space as a kind of sleeping quarter for a bunch of people. (some easy tent-construction could be enough at least in warmer climate) THere is some nice pictures in the Kontiki book by Thor Heyerdal (the small cabin on top of a raft) But i prefer sailing, not rafting across oceans.

Another option which is feasible to get more people joining a sailing coop.. In old days it was normal to cut a boat in half and stretch it in the middle. If i stretch this boat by 3 meter (15 feet) i have space for another 3-4 people. That should be pretty easy work.  Then Im up to 10 people in this theoretical sea-gypsy society. :-) 50 feet is legal to sail without any certification.  (at least in my part of the world)

anyway. enough daydreaming :-)
