Well, I'm retired, but that was still wonderful, Tgirl.  Funny that most of them were in the advertising biz.

Glad you liked it, GD and Cush, it is well done and I guess with so many consumers not consuming, the ad biz would sink fast!

Here in Houston we're finally starting to see fallout from the drop in oil prices.  Engineering companies aren't getting much new work from the oil majors, and a feeling of fear/uncertainty has taken hold in the office as there will be layoffs eventually.

I'm only 26 (been with the company for 2.5 years), and I'm betting there's a 2/3 chance I'll be without this job a year from now.  Hopefully I can make it halfway through the 13 month lease I just signed before TSHTF on my income.

Well, it's 14 months from my original post in this thread, and I got word I'll be laid off the 2nd week of March... the last year has been really good for me... we'll see where I am a year from today.  Shocked

Chlorine gas was first introduced as a weapon on April 22, 1915 at Ypres by the German Army,[18][19] and the results of this weapon were disastrous because gas masks had not yet been invented.

Gas masks had been invented decades before. At the time of Ypres however, armies didn't necessarily equip their troops with gas masks, probably because of cost. Once different gasses became part of war masks were distributed. Casualties and deaths were remarkably light, except for Russia, the nation which suffered the worst of German attacks. Oddly enough the nation suffering the 2nd greatest number of casualties, including death - Germany.

Well, I've seen this thread for a while and now have a reason to go back and read all 45 pages. MY husband found out that his teaching contract will not be renewed for next year.

We are all a little shellshocked but no time to mourn the loss of a great job ...gotta get busy.

Well, we have to think about it a bit, but he may be able to teach private lessons out there, the question is if he can get enough students to make it worthwhile to go out there. It would be some income but no health insurance. We could try to rent our house to some grad students at the University.

My concern is that we move and it eats up all the cash we've manage to save and then he doesn't get enough students. Some of that can be under the table. But if there is no income to be found in this area, it makes no sense to stay. He can cash out his state retirement account in the fall so that will be about 16,000 which will provide a cushion.  He will get paid till the end of August, so that gives us some time until he can file for unemployment and we can keep saving as we have diligently have been doing.

I will be working at a local farm for the summer which will help to fill the pantry for next winter and I gotta get my knitting business up and running again.

Kmaine, add my voice to the condolences. It sounds as though you have some back-up capabilities, that's a big plus!

I've been thinking about this all morning.

And these are thoughts that run through my head. First, in all the prepping we have done over the last 3 years of our awareness, we have been building up skills, some of these skills are really going to help us through this time. First, we know how to grow a lot of food. Second, we built up skills that will provide some income. Hubby shears sheep, we may become market gardeners, we have built up many skills in self-sufficiency that will serve us well. We don't have a lot of debt but it would be really great if we could get our monthly expenses ( outside of food and gas) under a 1,000 a month.

I am also thinking that This is the Shit Hitting the Fan. Yeah, there may be some big event in the macro world that will turn the world up-side down but it is this sort of event on the personal level that many folks are going through which is changing the dynamic of our culture.

You sound very grounded.  I hope your plans work out Kmaine2.  But more so, I hope your man gets a job again.
You have my sympathies for the suddenness.

Damnation.  I am sorry kmaine2.  With all the bad news I've read today, it gives me a sick feeling in my gut and makes me want to scream and cry for everyone.

Hey, MTT, I just noticed your Isaac Asimov sig ling.  Talk about a concise summation of doom.  I used to belong to Zero Population Growth, and then the spin off, but no longer.  I just don't see much effort or care in the world.  So, being a part of nature, we will let nature's rules solve the problem.

Pretty much sums up my philosophy now.
