Got to read "Alas, Babylon" for the first time while in the hospital last week.  What a treat to have enough time to read without an eye on the clock.  Can't believe I missed this one back when. I'm going to send a copy to my daughter in Gainesville (born in 1959 when the book was published). She teaches immunology at the vet school and has recently started the program for animal shelter medicine. Dr. Cynda Crawford, her partner, is the person who discovered the "new" canine influenza in greyhounds. I have to recommend, again, the Jane Alexander film called "Testament".  Grim, but offers up a view of positive community effort.
