Anyone get any food from Angel Food Ministries?

http://www.angelfoodministries.com/Default.asp?

from the website:

What is Angel Food Ministries?

With a heart to help others and a generous spirit, Joe and Linda Wingo founded Angel Food Ministries in 1994 to provide food for friends and neighbors who were struggling financially. Today the Angel Food program now is helping provide food relief to more than 500,000 families each month.

The closest pickup point to me is about 25 miles away so not the most convenient for me plus it's heavy on meat which I eat less of now than I used to....I would like to go in with others and split it up especially if it were locally based.  I did try to get it started here but the interest wasn't here, but that might change as things get worse....

I don't know, but I'm about to find out. I do the "adopt a needy family" thing for Thanksgiving and Christmas and they'd love this.

I'll order a small box first and see if it's edible, lol.

We bought one order from them in July, the pickup point was about 10 miles away.

You do get a lot of stuff for your money, but honestly the quality was not very good.  Some of the veggies were moldy and the steaks were slimy.  I will not be ordering from them again.

I'm surprised at this because AFM claims it's restaurant quality..not seconds....also, I have a friend in a neighboring town that gets food from there often and I've eaten some of the food and it was fine...maybe you just got a bad batch for some reason...Did you bring it to their attention and if so what did they say or do about it?

They sell an allergy free food box....we consider it "larder food", as in good for calories, not necessarily nutrition.  But gardening like we do, those calories will be what counts and we can grow all our vitamins and minerals.

Question for those who have ordered this food - do you think it's actually a savings as compared to say, shopping in bulk at Costco?

Ellen,

You question has a lot of merit.  I think where I live, it's a matter of convenience, a seven mile drive to the Baptist Church vice a 67 mile drive to the city of Richmond.  Still I have not sat down and crunched the numbers.  We have more sources of food out in the sticks than we ever have:  a few young hippies have started a food co-op, and we are getting in good with local farmers, and I'll do a lot of trade for sweat equity.  However, all this could be broken down to dollars and cents and time and labor. A cost analysis would be valuable, but I can tell you one thing, I'm not going to do it tonight!
