Google fda and armour thyroid.

If you weren't aware of the situation, it's quite a mess. (I got the
heads up on this from another doomer, It's not in the news.)

The FDA has been causing trouble for the manufacturer. The manufacturer
has recently reformulated the med which caused problems for some
hypothyroid folks, including heart palpitaions (got 'em). This only
added fuel to the fire.

Needless to say, the medicine is on backorder or unavailable. Folks are
scrambling to find replacement therapies. (I'm going to post this under health as well.)

The situation seems to be changing daily.

Uh-Oh
Thats what I take

I know the people who make synthroid have been fighting Armour for a long time
Synthroid is more expensive and does not include T3 - it only contains T4
Synthroid also can lead to bone loss and osteoporosis when used long term

The manufacturerers of synthroid have tried to give Armour a bad name for a long time

I pay about $18 for a 3 month supply of Armour
Synthroid cost $20 per month - or $60 for 3 months. Plus you have to take a separate prescription for T3 to get the full benefit (and I forget how much that costs)
Not to mention - that you also have to take another medication to prevent bone loss  from the synthroid - and that medication  causes other side effects ( in fact if you have leg cramps while taking the bone loss medication, you cannot take it - and I did have leg cramps and could not take it any longer)

Any thyroid replacement can cause bone loss, if the deficiency is overcompensated. Even if you're on Armour, you still need to check your TSH occassionally for best long term results. Wink Hope armour doesn't disappear.

I was wondering what was going on.  It turns out the FDA has never approved Armour, the company has just been operating under the radar for a long time.  With the FDA on their case, I fear we may have seen the last of this drug.  Best guess, enough docs had gotten the word that Armour works better than Synthroid that they were stepping on profit margins. Angry

yes, profit margins
because so many people want armour instead of synthroid
it helps me MUCH more than synthroid did

??  Lugol's Solution is iodine. It might help some people who have low thyroid due to iodine deficiency, but will not help others that have serious damage or removal of the thyroid gland. And too much iodine is as bad as too little.

Kelp is one of the best sources of iodine.

I take a low dose of Levothyroxine. I am not too happy about this and I would like to heal it and not have to take it at all. I am worried about the availability of such medications in the future. On top of that, with our financial meltdown and possible hyperinflation, who knows if it would be affordable in such a scenario.

My BF sent me this article in email, and I think it is worth considering.

Avoid This if You Want to Keep Your Thyroid Healthy

Good idea to read the article but if you don't have time, what it says is that the pesticides and many ingredients in commercial soaps and shampoos bind to the thyroid and displace Iodine there and so what happens is that people suffer an iodine deficiency....Taking extra iodine may not help (not sure here??) because these poisons hijack the receptor sites. It seems that a change in DIET relative to eating organics is the answer. So, there are foods I will have to avoid if they are non organic. If you don't buy certain organic items such as peaches and apples, they said to peel them because they are heavily sprayed. Some food items are better than others in terms of the amount they are sprayed.

I do aspire to raising my own food eventually. I love strawberries, but I will have to make sure they are USDA organic if I want to buy them. Also be careful what soaps and shampoos you use and they said what you put on your skin or scalp, you INGEST. I have a lot of shampoos I got for preps, but I think I will go to my health food coop and buy safe ones...like Dr Bronner's soap and some shampoos too in bulk. Then I will ditch the others....they weren't that expensive to begin with. I will just give them away.

Also, I get the Natural News newsletter in email and one thing they said recently is that Strontium may actually contribute more to building bone than Calcium does.

I know that iodine does not replace thyroid. But, having a good source of both kinds of supplements (iodine and iodide) can help normalize thyroid function.  And yes, too much is also a problem, so anyone deciding to take this supplement would of course want to determine the correct amount for them.

Thanks for the info.  Never heard of armour thyroid.  Interesting.
I have no thyroid and take levoxyl everyday.  When that goes I goes.

It's scary isn't it ?  Sad
How so many of our lives have become dependent upon medications controlled by the system

Ive never seen a doctor prescribe anything but synthroid honestly, im not sure what this is all supposed to be about.  Ive never used the competition when dispensing meds to patients in the past, and nobody has ever enquired about them either.
