Doom in our time....

This is a great thread, thanks Chickengirl!

My kids are 16 yo (daughter, bright but no organization) and 14 yo (son, mild autism, high functioning).  Where we live out in the country, they are slowly learning some of these skills.  It is just so hard to unplug them from the computer and Playstation 2!  I limit them to 2 hours total on the weekend, and that is after all chores/homework is done.  I think that "unplugging" will be a major challenge to a lot of kids.

My daughter thinks I am a loon for keeping up with the preps here at the house and in our secondary doomstead at the deer lease, but I make sure she is there helping.  My son does like his routine - but we have been working very hard on being spontaneous (something oxymoronic about that last statement).

The only thing I would add to you excellent food list is plenty of MVI, B and C vitamins as fresh foods may be rare.

thanks Hope  Kiss

agree with the above - ideally fresh foods would be available, but if they aren't nutritional supplements are going to make a huge difference...

what do you think of adding good fish oils and Zinc to the list?

Yes, but be careful with the fat solutble vitamins like A, D, E, and K.  You can get too many of these and get toxic.  The old days it was cod liver oil but your kids will revolt if you give that to them! LOL.

The B's and C's are water soluble and whatever you don't need, you pee out.

The "micro" nutrients like Zinc, selenium, copper are also important.

And don't forget Calcium!

I have stocked up on a good MVI, extra C, OTC omegas for everybody to take a daily dose for 3 years.  The shelf life on these things is like forever if you store them properly.

Of course, if you are prepping with veggies that have a lot of Vitamin A, like carrots, if you dehyrate them, keep them out of the light.  I vacuum pack them in a plastic bag then put them in a mylar envelope and store the whole thing in one of my plastic buckets.
