I've had the "being attacked" thing a couple of times.  Never bought the sleep paralysis explanation ...  Undecided

Aussie you should research "sleep paralysis" many people have it. When everyone falls sleep they are usually paralyzed. Its a biological safety mechanism so you dont physically act out your dreams in your sleep. in sleep paralysis this mechanism gets messed up and people wake up paralyzed and also often accompanied by terrifying hallucintations such as alien abductions and demons. sleep walking etc. is the opposite problem of people that dont get properly paralyzed while they are sleeping.

Many years ago when living in an old victorian apt bldg in Portland, ME, I had a similar dream to Aussie's.  In my case, it definitely seemed like a male demon was on top of me (I had been asleep on my stomach) with rape on its mind.  Yes, it was terrifying and seemed to take every ounce of willpower I could muster to finally make it go "poof".  It was around 3AM and I was so shaken, I turned on some lights and went to the bathroom, where I found the toilet seat and lid, both in the up position.  I NEVER leave the toilet seat up, let alone the lid.  Explain that one.   Shocked

Oh, and last night I had disturbing dreams, but it's quite disjointed right now.  I do remember my female rottweiler being attacked (by humans or animals, I can't recall) and I thought she was dead.  When I got to her, she was alive but was bleeding and had flesh hanging off her face.  I just remember holding her in my arms with her blood all over me.  Ugh, and I didn't drink any milk yesterday.  Sometimes I have great dreams, real adventures, where I am doing and can do things I know I can't, but I hate the "other kind".

* had a dream where my 8 yr old DD was in hospital after an accident and was being turned off live support - had to call everyone to come up to say goodbye, including her dad, organise the funeral (flowers, music, photos, readings), wash and dress her for burial. Woke up and cried for hours afterwards.

*one where we had planted the paddock below the house full of herbs and bulbs, all flowering and ready to harvest, when DP's dad came along with a tractor and plowed it all under (completely out of character for him lol).

*one about apocalyptic plague bearing zombies

*one about zucchini - dunno what it was about, but there was LOTS of zucchini  Cheesy

and one last night about me getting my arms and legs chopped off and sew on backwards because I disagreed with some americans about america being a paragon of love and tolerance  Grin, the chopping and sewing was because I was a "contrary" woman  Roll Eyes

only the first one was upsetting, the others were just plain odd. All in the last month or so, with lots I wake up not remembering.

content is normal for me (have been having these kinds of dreams as far back as I remember, speilberg could make a fortune from what happens in my head  Cheesy), frequency is likely due to pregnancy....

That's a fair enough explanation in my book. I looked up a couple of medical sites and I would say that's what it was. Can you explain the doppelganger though?

Ah, but science always has an answer.  Still, how does one explain my toilet lid up -- oh, and just a whole lot of other stuff?  No matter how bright we be, we still sit inside the wee-wee.

Here's an excellent album by Dredg that includes some songs with lyrics about sleep paralysis.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dredg

Quote
El Cielo (2002-2004)

After signing to Interscope Records, the band began work on their major label debut, El Cielo. Like its predecessor, El Cielo was a concept album. Initially intended to revolve around Salvador Dali's Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bumblebee around a Pomegranate One Second Before Awakening, the band expanded the focus to include sleep paralysis after learning of Dali's own influences.[11] As they had done with the liner notes of Leitmotif, Dredg chose not to include the lyrics; instead, they printed letters sent to them by people suffering from sleep paralysis. Several songs on the album even included lyrics taken directly from the letters.[12]
