Youtube keep dicking around, making it possible, then impossible to embed videos
in forum posts. At time of writing (August, 2009), this is the workaround that works:

1. Select the "Align Left" button.
2. Inside the tags, paste the url, like so:

Stickied, will add other workarounds here as they dick around and move the goalposts.

Please be aware that posting links to copyrighted music videos etc may make you liable for copyright infringement. This will cause Matt loads of aggro answering cease and desist letters and demands for the ip address of infringers in a worst case scenario so check and think before embedding.

edit to add how to.

Embed ypur video. It will fail and leave the url with the words noexternalembed in 2 places, hit modify or edit depending on the program you are using and delete the words noexternalembed and any associated # symbols with the words. Towards the end of the string is an = sign. Delete this and replace with a /

Save and it should work.

Use your common sense because under present law it is you and not Matt who is responsible for any infringement.

Sorry for any video embedding problems, including those from Google video. I'll try to figure out how to make them links only.

It is at the moment but there is a pending courtcase that may result in a change in the law. Presently google and youtube are taking responsibility for the clips and fielding legal enquiries. You used to be able to embed directly but now have to use a workaround due to a change in policy at youtube. My suspicious mind is saying what a perfect wriggle out for utube. (We don't allow direct embedding due to copyright issues but those nasty people changed things without our permission) so take it up with them not us.

What works for me is to hit the alignment button like Dermot demonstrated and then copy and paste the "embed" tag to the right of the utube video between the brackets.

Haven't had a problem yet.

How to Embed Youtube videos so it doesn't say "External Embedding Disabled".

Go to Youtube and copy (highlight address, right-click>copy) the video's URL from the little box on the right...It looks like this:

"h__p://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jo-8kSV_HhU#"

Hit the Insert hyperlink icon (the globe) and then paste (right-click>paste) the video's URL you just copied.

Hit the Save post button.

Now, go back to your post, and select "Modify".  You'll notice that the address you copy and pasted looks different.  It'll look like this:

''url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jo-8kSV_HhU#noexternalembed]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jo-8kSV_HhU#noexternalembed''

Delete everything after the # sign in the link to make it look like it did the first time you did it and re-save.  Now it should work.  I don't know how the address gets modified automatically, but it does.  But it only seems to modify itself once, so if you go back and fix it, it stays fixed.

(ooops, I see jock hit on this above me...but I'll leave this as it has some more detail in it)
