I just feel like sharing this.  After learning about PO early this year, I spent the first several weeks trying to find information that would prove PO was still a far off event.  After more study, I concluded that we're facing a huge problem.  So I spent the next several months trying to shed my 60+ hour/week job.  I also turned down a lucrative promotion because I wanted more time to plan.  Three months ago I got a more sane job for the same company.  Two months ago I purchased several acres of land.  Last week my home closed escrow.  So now, after 8 years, I'm renting again, debt free, and planning for the future.   I couldn't have done it without knowing there were other sane folks out there who looked nuts to many friends and coworkers.

Hey FremontMatt! It's tough to step through the looking-glass, isn't it? But at least you're doing something to get ready.

What are you planning for your acreage?

As I like to say, "your failure to be informed does not make me a whacko." (don't know where I got this line from unfortunately.)

Thank you all.

I live in Fremont, CA.  My new property is in the Midwest--where my wife and I both grew up.  We're planning to build a small house there next summer (on 50+ acre purchased outright from the equity on our home--I'd rather be lucky than good--but I recognize that luck is the intersection of preparedness and opportunity).  We both have fantastic careers in the current Silicon Valley economy; we recognize that our skills will be useless in the new economy.  So we'll have one foot in both...

I don't know what we'll do with the land--but 1/3 is pasture and 2/3rds is wooded.  But it provides flexibility.  It's near a small town with many big city services but away from interstates...
