IMO, in order to quit smoking and have it take, you need to want it.  you need to know why you are quitting, and those reasons need to be stronger than your desires and cravings.  the reason needs to be powerful, so powerful you remember it every time you think about smoking, and it continues to keep you from smoking.  only you can know this reason - it will and should be different for everyone.  in my opinion, if you don't have a reason like that yet, it will be harder for you to stop.

i suspect the above is why hypnosis can often work with quitting smoking.

one last thing.  i think if you make your last cigarette very memorable, it will be easier to stay quit.  make it a memory not worth destroying for a cigarette.

EDIT:  I think I should not for the record, I currently smoke, but was quit just fine for four years.  Just so happened that my reason not to smoke divorced me.  Up until my last year of marriage though, I thought it would last a lifetime.  I didn't really want to quit in the first place, so that wasn't the best reason.  If you want to quit and have a powerful reason to stop and to stay stopped, that is the ticket I would say.

I don't smoke... except the very rare cigar, and the drunken cigarette... but since getting out of college, those types of nights have become rare, so you're probably right that I don't know what it's like to be addicted.

Anyway, there was another similar thread on this, and Animus Boreas swore on this book, and I thought it was intriguing enough to remember it:

http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Way-Stop-Smoking-Non-Smokers/dp/1402718616

So, you may want to see if your library has it... can't hurt, right?

Cool.  Thank you.

Re: third hand smoke.....as I mentioned, I am trying to quit.

I already know it is unhealthy.

Looking for ideas, actual methods to quit.  I have plenty of reasons.

The chemical addiction overwhelms the reasons.

I do hypnosis to help people stop smoking - I have for 30 years
First you have to "do" something to get your mind off of smoking (eg. I had 2 college guys who dropped and did 5 push-ups every time they had an urge. I had one lady who threw darts at a picture of her ex-husband - Hey whatever works  Grin )
Drink a lot of water to get the nicotine out of your system
Make a list of the positive benefits that you will have by stopping smoking (the ones that are important to YOU - not that you have been "told" should be important)
For some people eating alkaline foods can help (eg. almonds, raisins, carrots) Carry them around with you and snack on them when you have an urge.
Cut a straw in half and carry it with you - and use it like a cigarette
The actual physical urges are mostly gone in 3 to 4 days
There are withdrawl symptoms that you may or may not have:
Coughing more (lungs clearing themelves out)
Insomnia or sleeping too much
Dizziness or inability to focus (increase in oxygen levels in your brain because you are not smoking)
Depression ( becaue it is such a huge habit - and part of your life - also can be  a part of physical withdrawl
Constipation
These symptoms _ if you have them - or temporary and will only last a couple of weeks.

I've never smoked, but I've helped several people quit with acupuncture.  Again, as others have said, you have to be at the point where you really want to quit.  It's best if you can get treated every day until the cravings subside.  Most people said the first treatment would last for a day, then they needed another treatment.  I would definitely consider combining this with hyponosis.

I've been a pretty heavy smoker for 20 years. I've tried pretty much everything. The problem is I enjoy smoking and to be honest I enjoy that little rush that nicotine gives, and I enjoy the actual act of smoking. But I hate feeling like crap all the time. I really believe that it's not so much the nicotine that's the problem, it's the hundreds of other chemicals that are in cigarette smoke... the carbon monoxide, methane etc. etc.  When I have quit before using the gum I felt great, but missed that sensation of actually smoking.

I just sort of stumbled across electronic cigarettes recently. I put an order in a few days ago, haven't got it yet. It's incredibly not suitable for life after TSHTF, but hey, after that happens I'll have to quit anyway, in the meantime I'm going to try this out and see how it works. It's just a little battery powered cigarette looking thing that creates a vapor of nicotine that you inhale instead of smoke. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than cigarettes once you buy the device  because they can't tax cartridges, just tobacco, though they will probably make it illegal soon for that very reason.

A lot of people have said they haven't smoked a normal cigarette since they started using electronic cigs and they feel a lot better. I'm going to try it out and put a review up to let you all know how it goes. Pretty lame really when you think about it, but like I said, I've tried everything else lol.

Here's a link to a message board where people discuss their experiences with it.

It's been said that every cigarette just feeds the enjoyment of the first one and that there is no enjoyment in any subsequent one.  Maybe a thought of being a slave to the first cigarette is a motivating enough force to quit

Ana,

You are obviously a non-smoker.
