I was surprised to see the issue addressed at all and that it was refuted by the writer amazed me. I deleted my link to Al Bawaba years ago and was expecting BAU when I Googled to get a new one, it was heartening to see a more um, balanced approach there today.

Al Jazeera, btw way doesn't have anything about H1N1 on it's home page.

I think its dropping off the radar for many news sources as a headline. After all as they say "If it bleeds, it leads" Wink and this isnt beelding just yet. A worrying thing is that as it drops off the headlines people become complacsent (sp?) and then when/if it returns at first we'll get the "oh yeah here we go again its no big deal" reaction which will allow the virus to spread wildly.

What's scary is that we don't actually know that theirs is so high.  Just a few days ago, Illinois stood at 266, and Wisconsin had 231.  Hard to believe that Illinois has doubled since then, and Wisconsin hasn't.

Just an FYI from the CDC folks:

According to the U.S.-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it takes between two and seven days for symptoms to develop following infection with the new virus, and people with the virus can pass it on to others during a five- to seven-day period after symptoms have developed.

But it can also be passed on before symptoms develop, right?

Re: number of Illinois cases--there's speculation about this over at the most excellent PFI forum, on pg. 15 of this thread: Personal Reports & Concerns - the 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic

http://www.singtomeohmuse.com/viewtopic.php?t=3239&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=ohare&start=210

Posters consider it might be the weather, or that Illinois might be more conscientious in testing and reporting, and then there's this poster's very interesting observation (hope this is okay to quote, and thanks to poster nsthesia over at PFI forum):

Illinois ranks 5th in the nation for the number of Hispanic citizens. 78% of them are of Mexican origin. The median age is 26.

I looked at my state of FL. We are ranked 3rd in the nation in the number of Hispanic citizens. But only 16% are of Mexican origin.

I wonder if that could indeed be what initiated the dramatic differences in the number of early cases. Lots of relatives all visiting each other.

My British expat buddy who visited his girlfriend in Mexico eleven days ago (as reported to you somewhere back on page 1XX) just got back and called me today. He was in the Yucatan. After we exchanged some flu jokes he said he does actually have a sore throat and cough. He blames the canned air in the buses and plane. I'll check up on him again in a week.

And adding in the period that they are infectious before becoming symptomatic .... interesting.

bah, I think we're pretty much resigned to the fact that we'll come in contact with this sooner or later.
we just like keeping track of it.
