As far as it goes, GM and Onstar are at this moment airing ads of a stolen Tahoe being pursued by police and brought to a stop by Onstar on command. The vid was shot in the US as far as I can tell from the highway signs n cityscape.

Imagine 500,000 people trying to bug out and escape a bad situation in a city.... the gov tells everyone to stay put, then remotely kills the engines in thousands of cars. The ensuing traffic jam cuts off all exits....

My husband and I were just talking about this... sorta. I've been wondering when the kill switch will become mandatory with the excuse it's to corral car thieves.

They won't make it mandatory.  Instead the insurance companies will charge you twice as much if you don't have one.  You won't be able to afford the insurance to drive unless you do have one.   Our economy will benefit either way. The car companies can charge more for it, or the insurance can charge more without it.  Everyone will rush out to get one.
