If you are unemployed right now I would suggest looking into this. It sounds like the lesser of two evil bandwagons to jump on if your desperate for work.

In my area there is no work, at least none that I have come across or my brothers. I have been without work like 5 months now myself. I started to hear things about Americorp within a few weeks of Obamas election win.

I have heard that..

A) Inside the Stimulus package is a huge allotment of money meant for the Americorps with more to come. This money is meant to expand the size of the Americorp something like ten fold. So far they have recieved nearly 200 million, with more to come. It is part of Obama's vision of helping America, promoting national service, and the Americorp seems to be a major way he will promote.

B) Soon when American kids turn 18 they will have to serve in the Americorp? Was there not just a bill passed which translates into forced service at 18? I am not under the impression that there was a specific way, but it seems to be leading to service in Americorp? Sounds like the Americorp might be a bandwagon to jump on.

So I went to their site, checked it out.

They do not pay alot, they are not specific in dollar amount at all, they just say a monthly stipend, possible child healthcare, they pay for relocation and an end of service stipend as well.

I created a profile, got some references and completed it. Did a search in my state for opportunities and was able to apply to four.

The work is pretty much helping the elderly, teaching children to read, out reach work for the homeless/poverty stricken, helping poor communities out of poverty etc.

I have heard one negative thing, which was well disturbing but meh. This person said working in Americorp usually entailed a desk job pushing paper for the government.  /shrugs

Just a FYI

Smoke 'em if ya got em... It beats the military.  Roll Eyes

It puts you into the "directly sucking tax dollars from the American people" category, but it's never going to be paid back anyway  Tongue

Well at least your using those dollars to do something actually useful for people in the community?

Sure.

If you see something that needs doing and can take care of yourself and others while doing it . . . hey sounds like a good thing to me.

Best to you and your bros.

I was curious and checked out the Habitat for Humanity. Minimum age: 18, Maximum: 200. Dang, they are desperate! Wink
