It's indeed amazing how blind many of these academics are to anything outside their own area, indeed their own department, it's a bubble, another one that's waiting to burst.

That bubble is one of the biggest restricting factors in modern research of any type. I'm trained in anthropology. That discipline is inextricably linked to sociology, palaeontology, archaeology, biology, genetics, and ecology (just to name a few). The sad truth is that the practitioners of these disciplines rarely talk to one another.
