Well, I finally saw it today with my wife and she has been rather depressed (crying off and on all day). It was pretty much everything I expected it to be... the peak oil pile driver in the nuts! Our favourite doomer (aka, the man in the shinny green shirt) frequents the documentary with sage little quibs underscoring what a terrifically large shitstorm we have gotten ourselves into.

So it's not exactly a date movie then?

lol well certainly not a first date movie anyway!

it was pretty good, the problem is, when you get to a certain point of PO awareness all the stuff you watch and read is the same infomation over again.

the only thing that really changes with this thing is the yearly data from the wells everything else has been said before
for that reason i think i've stopped buying PO books now

I have rented the movie and it is sitting here unwatched as of yet....Hubby does not seem to keen on watching it...but once I put it in I know he will..... perhaps later today....

I think its a great movie it would be nice if they went into more depth on why most of the solutions wont work but it does generally a great job .

Ive gotta say The best guy in it is that guy sitting in front of all those survivalist stores  , I like the bit where he says the us public would buy fancy hydrogen cars but not ride bikes

good job doctor doom

I think they touched enough (within the time constraints) on the futility of the situation. A very well done documentary. Have you ever seen the short with the director and Colin Campbell playing accordian?

"The hummer I believe is more of a status symbol where look at me, look at me, I can afford a hummer, I drive the best  he says .

and the damn thing does 10 miles per gallon

The shots of baku after the oil rush were very good too its amazing what a state we can leave things

I saw the movie this past Friday as well.  While I thought the information was good, I'm not sure if the general u.s. public will truly understand the consequences we face.  Although the alternate energy sources were mentioned for the most part, I'm not sure if what was said about them will actually be convincing enough to the general public here in the states.
For example, some people in the u.s. will listen to the guy who mentions that . . . in order to have a certain amount of energy we would have to cover the state of  California in solar panels . . . , and conclude that this means every thing will be sorted out for us, kind of like . . . "whew, that's a relief, I'm sure the goverment is on top of this and we'll have solar panels powering the country in no time at all.  Now hand me my Playstation controller, I know there's a way to get Laura Croft nude with this thing"

I was surprised that there was no mention of coal.

Maybe it's because I've read so much of the severe doom and goom scenario up until then, that the movie didn't really hit it home for me as I thought it would.  Again, I think this is because of the knowledge that I've been teaching myself on p.o. and with it all that could possibly happen in OUR future.  If this movie was the first experience I had with p.o., I might have a different scared shitless attitiude, I don't know.  I would be interested to know first hand how people with zero peak oil knowledge took the movie.

I thought some of the 50's style educational cartoons were great.  Probably the most thought provoking images were those of the depleted oil fields.  Those images were amazing.  Just to see the boom to bust scenario play out is very convincing by itself, proving that something is defintely not right with the way we are doing things here on planet Earth.

Question for the Dr. of Doom:
Dude,
Where were you being interviewed from?  I loved the fact that It looked like you were already settled down in a bunker somewhere with the survival foods and camping gear.  For those who haven't seen the movie, In the scenes where Matt is interviewed, he's sitting in some basement with boxes of what look like Mountain House freeze dried behind him, and a huge military style duffel bag to his left, and in other scenes you see the opposite . . . scientists in thier nice libraries/ offices and other folks sitting in beautiful outdoor Italian style colonades.

BTW, I'm assuming people here watched the dvd that was distributed from Canada, which would mean that you saw the preview for the almost as scary documentary movie titled Jesus Camp.  Now that film looks f*cking scary!

This was the first thing I ordered from Amazon Canada, and already I see things that show me Canada's doing stuff better than in the states.  Just the packaging alone for the movie used probably a 1/3rd or more less cardboard.

Yep, that's cause you already drank the Kool Aid! It's like after watching the film you're reaction is "Mmm. . .decent Kool-Aid, good vintage, worth the price of admission but not going to jump up and down about it."

They interviewed me from the LATOC Global Command and Control Center.  IE, the corner of my living room.  They filmed me about 2 weeks after Hurricane Katrina. I had just got a shipment of survival stuff and they were like, "lets rearrange that stuff!!!". I guess they were hoping I'd be the lone nutter in the film as they filmed me last after they got all the scientists and "adults." So they took what is a basic desk with books on it (see the picture from the Fortune Mag article taken around the same time: http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/AboutMattSavinar.html) and rearranged it so it went from looking like the desk of a grad student or full time blogger/writer to "survivalist compound."

I wore the green sweater cause I thought I looked good in green. (and also it was the only clean one I had) I had no idea it would contribute to the whole "survival compound" look.

I think it confuses the audience. On the one hand the background and dress yells "CRAZY SURVIVALST!!!!, CACHE OF WEAPONS IMMEDIATELY TO LEFT!!! STACK OF BOOKS ABOUT THE NWO TAKEOVER AND BLACK HELICOPTERS IMMEDIATELY TO THE RIGHT." Yet I actually manage to articulate myself intelligently (if I may say so myself.) The contrast betweent he background and how I sound speech-wise throws folks for a loop I think. Not that it's that big of a deal though. I'm certainly not bitching or anything, I mean I did get in a movie prior to the big collapse of societ. I guess that's worth something. (well not really but you know what I mean.)
