I did not believe it about Seed Savers so I contacted them myself.  Here is their reply:
Thanks for writing!  This proves that you can't believe everything you read or hear...
The answer is no.  Seed Savers Exchange is in no way, shape, or form involved with Monsanto on any level.

SSE is pretty much the polar opposite of Monsanto.  We're a membership-based non-profit.  Unlike Monsanto, we want people to save seeds!  If it's genetically modified in any way (we have signed the Safe Seed Pledge - http://www.gene-watch.org/programs/safeseed/sourcebook.html#I), you can't save the seeds to plant again.

There is a FAQ that explains a lot about SSE as an organization, at http://www.seedsavers.org/FAQ.htm.  After reading that, if you still have any questions, please feel free to contact either myself or Diane Ott Whealy (Vice President of Education) at 563-382-5990 during regular business hours.

The agricultural biotech business is starting to look a lot like its pharmaceutical counterparts. Monsanto (NYSE: MON) is hooking up with small companies in research and development deals to try and keep potential technology from falling into the hands of rivals Syngenta (NYSE: SYT) and DuPont (NYSE: DD).

Another good seed company is FedCo, which immediately stopped selling Semini's when Monsanto bought it. They always let you know about seed sources. Go together with friends and get big discounts, too. It's a group based in Maine, and it helps a lot of local farmers stay in business.

how many of you save your own seed's ? i have been working at it for several years now. It is difficult at
times  but well worth the trouble. as of this coming spring i should have all my small grains, corn, soybeans and all my garden vegetables from seed saved . now just have to hang on to it and hope that i don't get any carry over from neighbor's crops to polute my crops with the  genetic mutations they grow.

It's getting kind of like a compulsion. LOL

yeah pam it is a compulsion.  my next thing is to save alfalfa, timothy, clover, and other good hay making grasses. the biggest trouble is getting the viable seed to start with.

I have limited space here but would love to get more of those types of seeds added to my collection.
BTW, if you want to do a little trading this fall, let me know. Wink

We have a lot of big seed companies here in Woodland, Calif., not surprisingly, and the folks at Seminis say it changed for the worse when Monsanto bought it out.  Same thing happened to one of our wineries when it changed hands three times being gobbled by ever larger fish, the largest being Constellation Brands.

I love saving seeds,
I don't really have enough room to grow much of anything,
so I just use my room to keep my seed collection going.

seed saving is such a critical part of gardening,
I don't see why the average gardener even uses a seed company unless they are just starting out.

I guess it was too much to hope for that Monsatan would go down with the economy.
