http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7540822.stm

After these successful tests in mice, they are now suggesting that the treatment be considered for human use at similar levels.

The dose they employed - up to four grams per kilo of bodyweight - was far greater than any that could be achieved using diet or vitamin pills, as the digestive system does not absorb more than a fixed amount taken orally.

The mice were bred to have malfunctioning immune systems, then injected with human cancer cells, which as a result, grew quickly into large tumours. The vitamin was then injected into their abdominal cavity.

Tumour growth and weight fell by between 41% and 53%, and while in untreated mice, the disease spread rapidly to involve other body parts, no such spread was seen in the vitamin C-treated animals.

The researchers wrote: "These pre-clinical data provide the first firm basis for advancing pharmacologic ascorbate in cancer treatment in humans."

Peroxide bomb

The treatment works because a tumour cell is chemically different to a healthy cell.

The vitamin C reacts with this chemical make-up, producing enough hydrogen peroxide to kill the cell, while leaving healthy cells unscathed.

Just wow.  What's next; aluminum pots and Alzheimer's?

My uncle had cancer and he used to fly to the states for a special vitamin C regiment. It cost a fortune but kept him alive a full 4 years after the docs told him he would be dead. He had an aggressive, inoperable brain tumor. Prior to starting the treatment they had to remove his left ear, left eye, nose, and large piece of his jawbone. He was given 6 weeks to live after the last surgery and lasted 4 years.

All wounds are mortal. You sometimes get a little slack in the rope but the rope always has an end. Bless the slack and don't waste breath cursing the drop. In the end we all swing. Of course, the more slack you get the harder the snap when you fetch up in the end, but who wants to strangle anyways?

I'm gonna sound like a druggie here, but would it be more effective than swallowing if it was snorted?

This is such a perfect response to the nonsense Toasty Toast is dishing out I just can't resist.  So - Linus Pauling said it thirty or more years ago and it was hooted and scorned and ridiculed as nonsense.  But, now someone else does a test and suddenly it's new information. Pretty nearly every new paradigm of a quantum leap into new comprehension follows the same path; an individual discovers something totally new, he is scorned, ridiculed and sometimes persecuted to the point of death. Then eventually the new knowledge filters into the collective psyche of human understanding and a few decades later someone else makes a "new" discovery that is accepted because it has already been in the filtering process for a couple of generations.

Make sure to get acerola. NOT "asboric acid" which is what most "vitamin-c" on the market is. AA is not the same thing, it's only part of Vitamin C derived from corn syrup. You can get actual acerola at either vitacost.com or wildernessfamilynaturals.com

@WFN: DON"T buy the coconut shreds. They're already selling out, I just ordered 50 pounds worth as I eat it daily and don't want to have to go without it. They also have a flax supplement that is the only one I trust on the market. Flax seed oil (yes, even Barleans) is usually rancid by the time it gets to the store.

Matt,

Mature coconuts are shippable without processing or packaging.  Folks write an address on the husk with magic marker, slap on some postage, and drop them in the mail.

No coconuts grow at my altitude, but in the lowlands, they're available free for the picking up.  Can you buy fresh coconuts at a local market?

Matt, do you have a link or more information on the flaxseed oil, such as why you trust it.

This is such a perfect response to the nonsense Toasty Toast is dishing out I just can't resist.  So - Linus Pauling said it thirty or more years ago and it was hooted and scorned and ridiculed as nonsense.

So he proposed that Vitamin C cured cancer in rats? He got the thing about colds wrong....who would have expected him to be right about rats!

http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/pauling.html

My favorite quote......

Although Pauling's megavitamin claims lacked the evidence needed for acceptance by the scientific community, they have been accepted by large numbers of people who lack the scientific expertise to evaluate them.

HEY!!! Boy does THIS individual sound familiar!

Yeah - it's part of the usual game.  It's called "discrediting."

Yeah - it's part of the usual game.  It's called "discrediting."

The article referenced does that too. And provides excellent historical information on the mans track record as well.

He was quite smart. But his "cure" didn't work on the cold. Oops. But it might work on cancer in mice. Guess what will determine if its true ( on mice ) or not? RESEARCH, not opinions from close minded people who don't even know what research is, let alone take the time to read any.

PS: For reference....just because something is a book, doesn't mean its research. And just because something is research doesn't even mean its true until verified by other researchers. Proving something to be true ain't easy, and it isn't done with random opinion polls by amateurs.

It's about a thousand times more bioavailable if you mix it with baking soda.  Ascorbic acid + sodium bicarbonate = sodium ascorbate.
Taken this way it's buffered and easier on your stomach too.

I hate having to wade through flaming on an otherwise interesting thread. Take to Thunderdome. Or even better. Get over it.

Then eventually the new knowledge filters into the collective psyche of human understanding and a few decades later someone else makes a "new" discovery that is accepted because it has already been in the filtering process for a couple of generations.

The paper itself stated that the amount of vitamin C administered "was far greater than any that could be achieved using diet or vitamin pills, as the digestive system does not absorb more than a fixed amount taken orally." Pauling took his dose orally, he did not inject it directly into the abdominal cavity, so your contention that he knew about this thirty years ago is false. Route of admission is as relevant as dose. Vitamin C certainly is necessary to the body, hence why the government recommends everyone ingest a minimal amount each day (too low in my opinion), but this research in no way supports the high doses Pauling took orally, nor do I suspect that injection of those doses directly into the abdominal cavity on a daily basis would be wise in a normally healthy individual.

Technically vitamin C and Ascorbic Acid are the same thing, but your point is well taken. Generally speaking it is best to get vitamins and minerals directly from natural sources like acerola which contain other beneficial compounds and often aid in the absorption of key vitamins and minerals.
