HungryRaven, I'd like to hear more about the Bates method. I've had some books on the library on it for months and I haven't cracked them yet. Is the method still working for you? Did you learn from a teacher or just from the books + practice?

Thanks,

This thread should really be made a sticky one!

As my eyesight is really bad, minus 7.25 on both eyes, I can’t imagine a life without glasses.

So I set out to test the glasses offered at Zenni Optical. The bifocal top of the line ones I bought three years ago cost me about 1400 dollars then. For less than 150 dollars I could get one pair of bifocal, one single vision for all round use, and one pair of reading glasses. The first two with sunshade. So I made an order. And yesterday they arrived.

Of course I don’t know how they will take wear and tear. But what the heck, with those prices, I can easily afford several dozen more. I could buy a pair or two for each remaining year I statistically have left without even noticing on my bank account.

I have progressive high index lens glasses with the transition lenses (turn dark outdoors) that I bought online over a year ago.  I have had no problems with them whatsoever.  They worked perfectly from the start.  I got them from one of the stores at the glassyeyes.com website, eyebuydirect.com.  I read the reviews at the glassyeyes site and decided that the eyebuydirect site suited my needs best.  I got them for about $85, because I waited for a coupon special.  Glasses with those features (progressive high index with transitions) cost me over $800 at my optometrist.  My optometrist messed up my prescription several times before they got it right.  They were not very cheerful toward me when I complained.  So, when I needed new glasses, I figured I had little to lose.  The glasses I got were right the first time.  I previously had bought reading glasses online since the drugstore ones were too weak.

Glassyeyes will give you lots of info.  Study the site.  For instance, this page walks you through buying glasses online
http://glassyeyes.blogspot.com/2007/10/online-eyeglasses-how-it-works.html

Take a lot of time to get it right.

I bought three pair from Z (all the same style, so I could swap out parts later if needed) about a year and a  half ago, and they are still going strong!   I'm thinking about buying another three pair of the same style, and some more clipon sunglass shades to match, before the end of the year.   I should be set for a long time with those, especially since (as I mentioned) I can swap out parts if needed to keep them fixed.

I bought a pair a month ago, or maybe a bit longer.  They're nice enough (though they feel very light compared to the glass lenses I used to get because I'm good at scratching them).  Just I went with an old perscription that's stronger than the one I'd been using (I was using cobbled-together glasses with lenses from my high school days).  So it feels strange sometimes, and it doesn't really improve my vision any better than the old ones.  I'm going to hold off getting more pairs (in different styles) until I get my eyes examined after I get married and have insurance again.

The glasses are too wide for my face, but that's understandable.  Does anyone know of any of their styles that really cover the eyes well, in case there's flying debris suddenly?

I wish I had seen this site a few months ago!  I broke my glasses and had to make my way across Portland in blind as a bat mode (by bus and light rail).  It was so unnerving to be out in the world and blind!  I got a pair of glasses from Lenscrafters for $300 which I absolute hate; they are very poor quality.  So now I can get several pairs at affordable  prices!

There was a book I read several years ago about improving your vision.  At the time I thought "this is interesting", but didn't have time to do any more than that.  I think it's time to reread it.  If anyone's interested it's called Take Off Your Glasses and See by Jacob Liberman.

If you need emergency glasses, try making "pinhole glasses".

A local LASIK eye surgeon has a deal running for 1500$ on the radio. 750 an eye to be able to see 20/20 without glasses if you are a candidate for it. Seems like something worth ripping off a credit card company for to me.  Cheesy

I'm sooo tempted by lasik.

I'm blind w/o glasses/contacts but I hate the fogging the occurs when doing anything physical in cold weather (which is about anything under 55F for fogging), or coming inside a warm room from a cold outside, or doing anything in the rain/fog/mist/snow.  I also hate the lack of peripherial vision.  I hate that I can't swim.  I hate that I can't go canoing in dicey water w/o fear of dunking myself and coming up blind either from lost glasses or from wet glasses.  Etc. Etc.  Sucks.

Even if you have a spare pair or three or glasses that doesn't mean you'll have access to your spares and it certainly doesn't mean that if you get in a bad situation you won't loose your glasses in a fight or something.

But...  with correction I see about 20/20.  With a botched lasik procedure I could be *permanently* f'ed, either with blurriness, ghosting, haloes, chronically dry eyes, etc.  High stakes, and I hate gambling.

And when about 40ish and beyond, you still would need reading glasses whenever trying to read or operate on anything closer than arms length….. Shocked

Strange that they always forget to tell you that!

No, they tell you that MANY times over actually. They also tell you your eyes could degrade even for the correction you have received. Still, the odds are in your favor they won't or if they do it will still be better than what you had. Blue Owl don't be afraid to ditch those puppies and give it a go. I swear it is the single best decision I ever made and it has made my life so much easier. As far as the risk, everything is a risk. This risk has a huge payoff though and the risk factor is very small. They know what types of conditions fail the procedure and they won't mess with you if you have them. Mostly it is up to YOU to relax, hold still and keep your appointments post op. -James

I've never been tempted by lasik because I do too much close up work and would really hate to not be able to see my beads without having reading glasses on. Also, taking out a splinter, treating a burn - anything that really, really needed vision very close. I just take my glasses off and can see just fine that close. So, no lasik for me.

I don't understand what you mean Lua, are you saying that the Lasik would ruin your near vision? Are you near or far sighted or both?

I am desperately nearsighted, with a minus 600 in one eye and a minus 700 in the other. I can see quite well very close to my eyes. If I had lasik surgery, it would be like having a pair of glasses on all the time, without the bother of contacts, which would mean that without wearing reading glasses, I wouldn't be able to see close up.

Yeah, I don't like the Lasik idea because it'll change over time, anyway, and I'll be in the same (or another undesirable) boat.  I can see well enough far away without my glasses, and quite well close up.  My eyes work well enough.

My hope is that as my eyes continue to change, I'll end up with 20/20 at some point  Grin
