Written back in the summer of 2001, "Ghawar is Dying" was posted on the New Colonist web site, and has kept things stirred up for five years now. Read the original here:

http://www.newcolonist.com/ghawar.html

I caught some flak almost immediately from some oil industy guy who wanted to know how I managed to sneak into a restricted area in Saudi Arabia (Ghawar) to get that information. What information? I made it all up. I've never been there- but apparently I guessed right. Another oil analysts contacted me from France to say that there were no accurate production figures available for the Ghawar after 1997. We both took that to be a bad sign. Art imitates life- or is it the other way around? Either way, we're pooched.

And yes, I do have a "Ghawar is Dying" bumper sticker on my pickup truck.

Enjoy.

Not sure why I keep coming to these sites. Everytime I leave, I am saddened even more. I almost wish the end to come and be done with us already. Lets get the suspense out of the way and figure out whos gunna be left so we can get on with getting on. Living in dispair sucks. lol.

I'll post something in the psych section on coping with Peak soon, but in the mean time, don't give up hope.  Our ancestors got by fine without oil and managed to be happy.  After a period of adjustment we will be capable of the same.

shoot, I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Watching the expressions on everyone's face as I tell them how phucked all of us are is absolutely priceless! So I guess I might be a little sadistic, but not that much. I liken it to enjoying the chase, only this chase will never be over until they are shoveling dirt on my cold dead face!

I've gotten to the point I'm with Fergus on this one. I've been studying peak oil for about ten years now, and yeah- let's do this thing. Get on with it. Bugs Bunny said it best:

Dale Allen Pfeiffer has some stats on Ghawar in an issue of Mountain Sentinel along with the other super giants.  Look him at survivingpeakoil.com and drop a couple bucks to buy the issue.  (And I do mean a couple, like 2)

It will be interesting to see at what point the Saudis admit what everyone else has been saying for some time about the Ghawar. I freely admit that I made it all up, but I was writing a piece of fiction set in the future- or so I thought.

I guess not.
