Someone recommended Studs Terkel's book which is on my list.  What others are your favorites?  I'm looking for first hand accounts of what daily life was like, social issues, etc.

Thanks in advance.

"The Great Crash" by John Kenneth Galbraith

While this book doesn't deal with daily life or social issues it is considered one of the definitive books related to the events which led to the great depression. The book, originally published in 1954 has been updated, I think the last time was in the 90's and it is really enlightening if you are wondering about similarities between the stock market crash of 1929 has to the financial stories of today. I recently reread this book and even though I was convinced our stock market was in trouble before, I now see that a serious crash is coming, and soon.

I was wondering if anyone had read "The Great Crash of 2010 -- How to Survive and Thrive in the Coming Hard Times" by Harry S. Dent and if they had, is it worth reading?
On the basis of Nougatpowder's suggestion, I just requested "The Great Crash" by John Kenneth Galbraith from the library, and that's where I saw this other title, which I also requested.
Does anyone have any feedback to share?

FDR's Folly... basically how he made the depression worse.

I liked, "The Great Depression - How We Coped, Worked and Played  Life-Experience Stories From the Carolinas' Piedmont", Edited by Margaret G. Bigger.  Lots of tiny little chapters, some just a few paragraphs long.  If you're looking for personal experiences, this one is good.

How is it we get to the 5th reply before John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" is mentioned? Read it, then watch the movie.
A blueprint for the future.

These are two great books on the Dust Bowl, another look at the future:

Dust Bowl by Donald Worster
The Worst Hard Time by Tim Eagan

It's not a book -- it's the national archives of photography projects from the Great Depression.  Gives you vivid visual info:

By subject: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/fsahtml/fsasubjindex1.html

By geographic location: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/fsahtml/fsageogindex1.html

Click on the subject or area of the U.S. you're interested in seeing.....it'll give you a variety of photographs......  For example....

Pecan shellers: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/S?ammem/fsaall:@FILREQ(@field(SUBJ+@od1(Pecan+workers--San+Antonio--Texas+))+@FIELD(COLLID+fsa))

Dominos: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/I?fsaall:16:./temp/~ammem_B5h3::displayType=1:m856sd=fsa:m856sf=8b22673:@@@

So, when you've got a little time.  From the Farm Security Administration photo archives at the Library of Congress.

A world some of our parents & grandparents knew......

For the Great Depression in Canada see "Ten Lost Years" by Barry Broadfoot.
