Yep, that's it exactly: The American economy is based on growth. To stand still is to roll backwards, hence the lack of any conservation efforts whatsoever. In reality, it's no different anywhere else. No one is going to invest a penny (yen, ruble, drachma, whatever) in a company that won't grow and be able to pay back more than the initial investment. Why should they?  Would you?

But the sad truth of that coming oil crash reality is that all investments will go sour. (Ok, maybe just 99%.) Why invest in the sotck market if you won't make money? Why put your money in a bank if it doesn't earn you interest? Without investors, businesses either die or fail to be born. And that's exactly where we're headed as the limits of oil limit all corproate growth. Can you name one company, anywhere, that doesn't depend in some way on oil?

If so, buy as many shares as you can- now.

I'd put anybody making weapons in that 1% that will do well Chip.  The smart money is in weapons and perhaps undertakers.

Maybe. Weapons are useless if you can't get them where they're needed- and that takes oil. Undertakers don't make much money on paupers, and there's going to be plenty of those. I was thinking more in terms of valid alternative energy companies, but honestly- no specific company came to mind.

Virtually all business is tied to oil in some way.
