...... The treatment, a breathing technique discovered half a century ago, is harmless if practiced as directed with a well-trained therapist.

It has the potential to improve the health and quality of life of many people with asthma, while saving health care dollars.

I’ve seen it work miraculously well for a friend who had little choice but to stop using the steroid medications that were keeping him alive.

My friend, David Wiebe, 58, of Woodstock, N.Y., is a well-known maker of violins and cellos, with a 48-year history of severe asthma that was treated with bronchodilators and steroids for two decades ...... http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/03/health/03brod.html?_r=1&em

The Buteyko method seems to be effective at reducing some of the symptoms of asthma/copd/anxiety ... but AFAIK, there isn't good evidence yet that it stops or reverses the underlying problem, or that it can be used to dramatically reduce medications.  My understanding is that it can help a person live with asthma better - it doesn't feel as bad, doesn't have as much of a negative vibe. Asthma can be life threatening.

Well, check out the article.  It seems that it CAN help with even life-threatening asthma in some people.  Or maybe can.
