Ditto for ordering other supplies as well. I ordered spring wheat from Walton Feed and it was back ordered 2 weeks. Also ordered a hand grain grinder from another company and it also was back ordered a few weeks, but all the orders finally arrived. People at both companies commented that they were busy, busy. Get it while you can.

If you have trouble with the catalog ordering look on eBay.
There are several regular seed sellers there that I order from and they may have seeds if you can't find what you're looking for in the catalogs.

Thanks for the heads up!!!!!!

Hi I work for the silverware company.

There's a surge in orders and we're running out!

Better order now before it's too late!!  Grin

When I ordered my seeds this year, a couple items were "out". Field pumpkins and a specialty pumpkin from Baker Creek (they refunded me in CASH! I love them.). Bountiful Gardens ran out of black currants and substituted golden currants.

I made the decision in December to order more than I need or have room for. I can always plant them next year. If you can, and the seed companies have the seeds, order more than you'll need. They'll keep well in the refrigerator until next year.

I don't know if it'll make people feel any better, but I ordered my seeds from Johnny's in January, and they were backordered on about 8-10 items then, mostly lettuce. It happens every year. I think that's kinda normal, as some suppliers get stalled or something. I'd worry, though, if a quarter to half an order or something was just not available.

I ordered from Baker Creek heirloom seeds and everything arrived about a week and a half after I placed the order.   They even sent me a lot of extra packets.  The seeds seem expensive, but if you order them in a package it turns out to be a good deal.  I got nearly 80 packets of seeds for 80 bucks  and shipping was just 3 bucks.  The other nice thing about the package is that if they're out of a particular variety, they will send you something comparable so you don't need to wait around for your seeds.  I was very pleased with them.  My seedlings are doing great too!

I know there's a link somewhere else on the forum, but here it is again just in case:

I am thinking about ordering that exact collection from them, since I live in Michigan.  I'm torn between that one and this complete garden package from Heirloom Seeds:

http://www.heirloomseeds.com/cgs3.html

Decisions, decisions.  I hope to put in my order this week.

I considered ordering that one too!  It does look like a really good deal.  I can't remember why I picked the Baker creek package, they both seem good.

I'll list what I got from them in case that helps you decide:

Type and number of packets:
amaranth-1
asparagus-1
beans-4
beets-2
broccoli-1
cabbage-2
carrot-2
cauliflower-1
celery-1
swiss chard-1
corn-2
cucumber-3
eggplant-3
endive-1
edible gourd-1
cover crop blend-1
ground cherry-1
mustard-1
assorted greens-2
basil-1
kale-1
leek-1
lettuce-2
melons-4
okra-1
onion-2
parsnip-2
pea-2
sweet pepper-3
hot pepper-2
radish-2
rutabaga-1
sunflower-1
summer squash-3
spinach-1
winter squash-4
tomatillo-1
turnip-1
watermelon-3
tomatoes-11

The only thing I didn't like about the package was the amount of herbs, only one-basil.  I'm just going to pick those up at the local organic market.  If you want to know any of the specific varieties I got from them just let me know!

I was really surprised to get 11 varieties too!  I've got a little Jiffy greenhouse started with 6 to 7 of each type!  AHHH!  Oh well, it will be an interesting year, maybe I can sell some down at the farmer's market.

Good luck with your garden too Sophie B!

I got a major order from rareseeds.com last week.  Conventional wisdom says don't go grocery shopping when you are stoned and have the munchies.  I might add, don't buy seeds after an afternoon of reading doom blogs.  I now have enough seeds for the next five years.

I am storing the unused seeds in mason jars with a desiccant.  BTW, I have 2.5 acres of land and a crew is coming today to clear the back acre for a large garden and orchard.

I will be prepared.  Fortunately, I live next door to an equine Vet and have a ready source of horse manure for composting.  We get about 4 months of his barn every year.

Done the same thing (the buying seeds after an afternoon of doom Wink )

Ordered the northern collection plus extra rutabaga and parsnips. Like you say, extra can be stored away - The site says good for 4 - 10 years if stored correctly.

Need to get started on the hoop-house once the snow goes.
