Hey Rube- What's with the Bill Hicks?? Shocked

Just read that Margaret Atwood, author of Oryx & Crake has written a parallel novel called The Year of the Flood.

Anyone read it?

I may have to check out that new Atwood book.

As for my identity change, I've had his picture as my avatar for so long I finally went the distance.   Grin

Has anyone mentioned the Book of Revelation yet?

I don't think that one's come up.  A bit of a downer, I hear.   Cheesy

Oh Broil, you made some droll recommendation that I took to the library and after research realized it was a bible reference.  I laughed my head off and felt very ignorant.  My bible thumping baptist grandmother had to be rolling in her grave.

And Rube-- it just rolls off the tongue.  Rubeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Quit being such a snot, it was only meant to be a little funny.  Revelation is really a novel in the collection of individual books we call the Bible,  and it's about the end of the world.  My signature is from it, and I think it's a fantastic book of its time.

Broil, so quit resurrecting it.  It is a bunch of garbage that has resonance only because we have grown so little.

It's not at all a bunch of garbage, in parts it is magnificent doomer literature (especially in the King James Version, which might possibly have had the hand of Shakespeare in the editing).  Look at the passage my signature comes from (which had to be condensed to fit).  Read it aloud taking time to pronounce the solemn rhythms.

It's a vital part of the early history of literature and of theology.

Literature, sure.  I just now get why you have oil in your name.  I have only to look at Rube's still current sig line.  It ain't all waiting on you.

Broil, you bring up the babbling again.  Look in the mirror.  But let me say this.  Insurance companies often get out of their financial obligations by saying it was an act of god.  I ask, what do they tell atheists?  I don't believe in god, but I will further the work of god to the best of my abilities.

Sure, whatever graveday.  I get messed up on alcohol or meds too sometimes and become a bit incoherent.

The thread was about top 10 end of the world novels, and I consider Revelation to be one of the best ever.  I'll have to go back and see what the others were that I said earlier in the thread, I've most forgot.  Except of course I remember Alas Babyon was on the list!

Oh, looks like I already voted for it, though I called it "The Apocalypse" by John of Patmos

I haven't read many, these are all I can think of:

Alas Babylon - first one I ever read, and still the best.

The Stand

Lucifer's Hammer

The Postman

Planet of the Apes

The Apocalypse - John of Patmos

Farnham's Freehold - Heinlein

The Time Machine - HG Wells

My favorite was Earth Abides, but it was too old school for most here.  Remind me who the author of Revelations was.  I don't have any meds except to control a virus that got into my eye.  Alcohol, yes, I like it and make my own wine, without getting too lost in the process.  No, I am stone cold sober right now, and I know a Methodist minister here who can shred Revelations.  Want to come on down and hear his story?
