Regarding Disarster

Alive: The True Story of the Andes Survivors - Piers Paul Read

Hungry Ghosts: China's Secret Famine - Jasper Becker

Gallipoli - Les Carlyon

Books that I have throughly enjoyed about survival are:-

Last Voyage of the Lucette - Robertson Family story

Left for Dead in the Outback: How I Survived 71 Days Lost in a Desert Hell - Ricky Megee

Touching the Void - Joe Simpson

Into the Wild - Jon Krakauer (not exactly survival but a lesson)

These are well worth a read.

I want to bump this up.  Just read the book on the Dust Bowl and the Whaleship Essex.  Both very interesting.  However, the Whaleship Essex....the people were so cannibalistic....and I don't mean at the end of their journey.  They exploited people and the whales.  Very sad story.  None of the players got much sympathy from me.  At least with the Dust Bowl book, one could empathize with the people.  I really enjoyed this list though, so thanks.
