Okay, so I'm both scared of and intrigued by Gurgi's intelligence and preparadness.  I'm a 35 yo male Oregonian and I only want to know whether she's single? Oh, and I'm in Portland, but not a "SNAG".

I've been stocking up on food and weapons.  Haha.  I'm waiting for Spring to plant my first garden.  Wanna teach me?

I am not qualified to welcome anyone to LATOC but I found the thread to be very interesting.  Welcome Gurgi.

I have not read Our Stolen Future, but I am interested in the topic of conventional agriculture and its effects on our ecosystem.  I grew up on a conventional farm and after my family was forced to sell it in the early 80s my dad and I were awakened to alternative and organic farming.  I think that PO is but one sort of hazard on the horizon.  I think there are plenty of other things to be concerned about as well.  Agriculture is definetely one of those that resonates with me most.

Sadly, organic as a label is mostly a marketing campaign.  That market space has been commandeered by large corporate ag.  I rely on the local farmers market where everything is local, hormone free, truly organic, and good.

Being the in Midwest, we are neck deep in conventional crop farming.  Each field is like a factory spewing agri-fuels (not biofuel) and consumes vast amounts of inputs such as; fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, fertilizers, more herbicides, and all the fuel needed to apply that list of crap to a field.  The crops themselves are GM in some way.  Most crop varieties are stacked with a trait known as Bt, its an insect repelling bacteria, and have a Round Up resistant herbicide trait, allowing it to live through shower after shower of Round Up.

This concerns me greatly and I appreciate the interest here.  Whether PO or some other cataclysm, food production will be an essential skill.  As a farm kid, gardener, and otherwise interested in eating I find these methods not only damaging to the terms of our present situation, but in the future as well.  I am extremely alarmed at the loss of bee populations in the world.  This is an extremely distressing topic.  In fact, it pisses me off because we are screwing things up to the point that, PO may be a footnote in the "Great meltdown" seemingly headed our way.  Einstein once said, paraphrased, if the bees die, the humans will be gone in 4 years.  Scary stuff.  Several studies raise concerns about the Bt trait in crops to the loss of bee colonies.

Interestingly, aromatic cedar oil is an amazing insect repellent.  It somehow screws up "pest insects" phermone system, making them flee the smell.  "Good insects" or predator insects in integrated pest management systems primarily hunt by sight leaving them free to hunt crop eaters.  There is a company in Texas that finally figured out how to get cedar oil in solution and stay there.  It is an extremely unstable oil.  Now that it can be effectively diluted, it is commercially viable.

Humic acid, along with some compost, natural fertilizer will keep your soil in amazing shape.  Especially in a permaculture setting.

Redreamer/Wendy: how right you are, I am alone, and I rejoice in that fact, rather than lament it.  I don't know if it is the intelligence or the stubornesss, but I do scare people, boy people, moslty.  Thanks for the welcome!

I don't think it's the male species in general so much as it is the male "North Americanus Asshatus Gigantus"

What's happened is we've become a nation of men with "angry beta male syndrome."* There's all sorts of reasons for this trend. Chemicals in the food, soul-killing cubicle jobs, a lack of opportunities to develop real masculinity, hours of television watching, sitting in cars breathing in toxic fumes, etc.  You take any 21 or 25 year old male and stick him in a cubicle for 10 years, feed him estrogen laden food, severely limit the sovereignty he has over his time and money, condition him to be angry and feel inferior via talk radio and televised propaganda, and by the time he's 30 or 35 you're going to have an "angry beta male" even if he is making six figures and drives a Lexus.

*There's actually even a book about this. It's called "The Irritable Male Syndrome."

You definitely might want to pick up the book. The explanations in the first 4/5 of the book are very good although recommendations he makes in the last chapter fall flat in my opinion. It's all pretty standard stuff: exercise, take vitamins. I was like "that's it?! what if I'm already doing all that stuff and am still an irritable hostile SOB? Now what?"

FWIW, Kermujin has a son too. She's already got him out "bringing him the [turkey] bacon" at age 13. If I recall he won a giant turkey for winning a marksmanship contest.

The first step to communicating with someone is to get their attention.   I recommend a 2X4 up the side of the head.

men are most definitely marginalised through contemporary western culture.......makes you wonder where it is going really  Undecided

The biggest issue to me though is the whole intrinsic motivation thing it seems to be completely switched off in many men ......... and any suggestion even gently noticing creates a reactive response.......which of course is counterproductive....... how to get passed that is the question. I do not see it as my resposibility in a relationship i guess...... but that's an individual thing. I am not even remotely interested ......i don't think that is a bad thing......its just evolution in action i believe.

I do not know the answer and in the remotest offchance you ever find out gurgi......let me know.  Cool

cause somehow i think its actually important.

People in general are marginalised by contemporary western culture.

Controlling the means of your own well-being affords a person many opportunities to be alive and feel alive.  We've destroyed cultures that have done that, and hopefully in the next century we are forced to reckon with that.
