Hi Latoc folk-

this is gurgi, reporting for duty.

Basic stats: 31, female, Oregon.

For as long as I've known myself I've been aware that the culture of consumption is on a collision course with the finite resources of the earth.  In high school I was a passionate environmentalist, and went on to get a double BA in biology and environmental studies.  Right up until the end of college I remained fairly optimistic that the environmental problems of the world could be resloved and was looking forward to spending my life fighting the good fight.  Then in my senior year I decided to write my ES thesis paper on endocrine disruptors, which was a pretty new issue at that time.  I read Our Stolen Future, and as much of the supporting research as I could lay my hands on, and I've been a doomer ever since.  Not just because I'd realized that "sophiticated and advanced" human generated technologies were unwittingly impairing the ability of all vertebrates to reproduce sexually, but because of what had been revealed to me about the nature of industrial agriculture, pesticides and herbicides being a major source of enocrine disruptors.  I had never before thought about where my food came from, but I started paying attention to the difference between orgainc and conventional.

Gurgi,

I moved your post into it's own thread and gave it it's own title.

I read "Our Stolen Future" too. In fact, when I was 16 (back in 1994) I did a PSA on hormone disruptors for my video production class. Of course everybody laughed at me at the time. (Not that I cared even back then.) Wrote an article recently too but will need to go find the link. Pretty scary stuff.

I do take grape seed extract and green tea and eat a ton of broccoli as these are supposed to help clear out the hormone disrupters.

Another book that had often popped up in the bookstore orders that piqued my interest was "Your Money or Your Life?".

I have that book too.  Cool

For the last couple of years I've been working on establishing an intentional community with about a dozen other people my age, something I was interested in and inclined to try before I ever heard of PO.  I recently decided to leave the project for a host of reasons, but the biggest factors were the ratio of workers to moochers, and the psycological manipulation shenanigans practiced both wittingly and unwittlingly by powerful personalities.

this is EXACTLY - and I mean EXACTLY - what I ran into when I began researching ICs. The worst offenders in my experience are the "SNAGs", that is "Sensitive New AGe Males" at least that was the guise they put forth but there would be constant psychological manipulations with them. Ugh.

Now I'm having a go at it on a much smaller scale, with blood relations.

Yep, same here. Either family or people I already know and trust.

Anyhoo, sounds like you have a lot of knowledge to share with the forum so welcome Oregonian Doomer.

Alright Gurgi,

No time to lose.  We're at 33% security right now.  You take the 2 o'clock position with Matt.  Keep you're eye on your sector, and shoot anything that doesn't identify itself.

Welcome Gurgi;

Yeah I spend a weekend at a small eco-Co-op farm.  Too much paperwork.  I've realized for myself getting together for land, then only working together as good neighbors and friends as desired and when convenient is preferred.

BTW I think I just started a post on Gurgis:  http://www.peakoilstore.com/forum/index.php/topic,11375.msg137843.html#msg137843

Welcome Gurgi. You wrote"Exactly what Gurgi is supposed to be is never clearly stated. He is described as being some sort of cross between man and animal (although lacking the intelligence of one and the wisdom of the other, respectively), having long arms, covered with fur and leaves, and ever hungry" You are a good writer and I am sure I will learn from your post, but I sure as hell don't want to see ya....................................Bruce  Grin Grin Grin
