Yeah... this is one of those threads that belong in the "Must Read" categories.

I was amazed at how many of these items are for sale everyday at my local Army Navy store. I either have or are weekly stockpiling most everything on this list. I drove to the local mall to check out another such store called"Old Navy", the little gay guy behind the counter got a tad upset with me when I told him how disappointed I was that they had no life preservers or life rafts.

As I was leaving a cool ripple of Irony came to mind. The boorish, spoiled brats buying the bright wrinkly clothing around me will likely soon have a more difficult time coping post TSHTF than the child labor that sweats out the offensive rags. Cool

I would add to this list cloth diapers, wool diaper covers, and nolin for diapering.

I would also add glass baby bottles with silicon (clear) nipples, bottle brushes and manual breast pumps (Avent brand) if you have a friend who is nursing her baby who might wetnurse/pump for your child.  And a goat if you can't breastfeed.

Any parent with a halfway decent heart (who didn't breastfeed) will do anything to keep her/his child alive and well.  The lanolin is for re-waterproofing wool diaper covers which are the best there is (Aristocrats or Lana wool covers).  You can get full diaper packages for around $500 all inclusive.  This will be GOLDEN in the near future and will make any parent your instant hero.  If that parent is your landlord, wow, instant month of rent etc...

Good work. Only query - why big dogs disappear.  I know folks might be driven to eat anything even their neighbor's dogs.  However I would hae thought that if you have the means to feed your dogs (I have an Irish Wolfhound) because you produce your own meat (I farm) and the dogs in question are useful for hunting big game (Moose, deer, bear, Bison) as well as in defending their people (Male Wolfhounds can be 34-38 " at the shoulder) that such dogs might actually be helpful survival tools and pups from such a dog might be sought after.

Second point: horses, donkeys and mules are not mentioned in your list, nor are harness and other tack, or carts and wagons that can be pulled by such equines.  Do you think these animals are all going to be eaten before they can be used to improve transportation and hunting ability?

I don't even know if the "Survivalists" of earlier times are still around, but here is a lsit from 1980. Note that pure silver coins were still available and gold was cheap enough to lay in a stock for barter

You will note the comments on the topical list of this thread are about what is really precious- they are barter items.

Item   Comments
$500. Face value silver US dimes   Silver has precious metal value

Item 40.  Big dogs.  Big dogs disappear?

I read this list a while back. I thought it was because big dogs are snapped up for their value as guardians. Any dog can be a good alarm system, but only medium to big dogs will be a deterrent.
