Very, very useful. Thank you Mr. FromOregon. So many things I read and thought 'ah yes, of course'. My only preference would be small cats rather than big dogs. Cats are really clean, will eat anything if they're really hungry and nothing if they're not, consistently remind you of the beauty of a four hour day followed by twenty hours of sleep, and they have a sixth, seventh and probably eighth sense when it comes to impending danger. This probably belongs in tinfoil section, but I once had headphones on (pretty loud) in my flat at about three in the morning, and felt a real 'hairs up the back of my neck' feeling. Walked out of my bedroom into the hall, and there was my fantastic cat, similarly hairs on end, staring pointer dog stylee at a burglar's hands reaching through the forced open bathroom window... I was tempted, although I'm by no means a violently inclined sort of chap, to crush the hard metal windowframe down onto his robbing bloody fingers, but settled for shouting, as hard as my diaphragm could muster (which is surprisingly loud when you're in full adrenaline mode) : RAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!" or something very similar. I certainly may not have just spelt it right. Anyway, he dropped to the ground outside the bathroom and had it away on his assembled toes. And Dill (my luvly cat) gave me a knowing look and sidled off into the kitchen.

So, ITSHTF, I would suggest (for the more paranoid bug-out defender) either a cat, or several sets of nice tinkly bells to hang at your points of ingress/egress. And the doors and windows.

And my other very serious suggestion to all LATOCers is Tiger Balm. Tiny jar, lasts for ever cos' it's so strong you only need a tiny bit, and you can use it very effectively on bites, stings, cuts, bruises, sores, blisters and to clear your nasal passages and wake you up a bit! Must get a new, jar, finally running out after NINE years...

Cats are a good early warning system if you pay attention to them.

They don't bark but will hear someone coming before you do and by their behavior you will know.

Here is an interesting description of how people of Sarajevo had to cope with no electricity, little food, no work, etc.

EastcoastJD, an amazing link - I live in Bulgaria (a neighnbour of former Yugoslavia) , have known about the Sarajevo tragedy from the news etc., but had never felt what these people really went through. Thanks for the link and those peoples' experience. A really helpful insight.

I agree that a cat is better to have than a dog.

Dogs eat a lot of food, shit everywhere, bark a lot, are aggressive and roam around all day getting into trouble. How are you gonna feed your dog when the local Wal-Mart isn't selling 50 lb bags of Alpo for $8.99? You're gonna have to do a lot of huntin'.

Cats on the other hand discreetly bury their doo-doo, are quiet, neat, loving, and stay low key. They also catch mice and rats. And they purrrr.

I've had a dog, I've had a cat. The dog is a great yard protector, but you're right - the cat is the indoor PROTECOR Smiley

And cats love listening to really loud dub all day long. Which, by the way, is another great way to keep intruders at bay : two hundred watt's worth of King Tubby, repelling all comers with sub-sonic barrages, mid-frequency  crunch by the bucket load, and some sizzling hats and ting to fry the would-be intruder's third eye. FWIW etc would keep a certain type of person WELL away I'm sure : ) x BtK
